How hard is it to become an electrician?

What certifications do you need, do you need to go to trade school, can you self-teach? I've always liked playing with circuits and tinkering with electronics, and think it might be interesting to make a career out of. Also, how much would an average electrician earn?

Certifications are a state level regulation. Most states require a combination of education, on-the- job supervision, and passing an exam. Like anything you get out what you put in. You can get a book and learn basic home electrical techniques but you'll need a second job to get by with that background.
