navy 6mth deployment sched. gone for 3 mnths and then home for 3? how does the schedule work?

my husband will be joining the navy soon. Now I know during sea duty, you have 6 month deployments. I have heard you stay out the full 6 months. and then i heard you go out for three, come home for three and then head out to do the last three. Wondering if anyone can tell me which it is and how the schedule works. the more detail the better. also curious after he goes to boot, what will be our process from there.
