My 3 year old boy was diagnosed with autism....?

3 months ago my son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, what made me decide to go to a developmental specialist was when i enrolled him in a daycare center, i observed that he is not sitting on his chair & doing different things from his classmates. i was shocked to find out that, i am totally clueless what asd is...i searched & read about the cause & treatments. we started the occupational therapy and we've been going to his therapist for 3 months now.i've seen a lot of improvements, and he can now ask & say what he wants, though he cant still compose a complete sentence.up to now, i am still seeking for answers. what is life when he grows old? is he going to outgrow his asd? he is my only son and im totally disappointed to find out that he has that kind of disorder.i just want him to have a life on his own someday.i cant be with him forever. some parents that i interviewed in the therapy center, they told me that a lot of children in the center finished the therapy after 3 years and already mainstreamed and they already attend to a regular school.i want to stay positive that my son can go to a regular next year after a year of his therapy.but i'll continue his therapy until he gets better.another problem is that i dont have a job to support my son's fee for his treatment, its very expensive.i just do hope that God will help me along the way.can you give or share some advice about asd and is it really true that 3 years of therapy is effective in order to get out or somewhat be a normal kid again? my son is normal and saying words when he was 1 and 2, thats why i didnt expect he has asd.thank you. im here in the philippines.God bless !

Hi,

I've had Autism, and ADHD, from birth. My mother probably had the same sort of problems you are going through, but you've actually got it a lot easier. I was considered just a naughty child until I was diagnosed.

I'm sorry to say people don't grow out of Autism. With the right medications, early intervention, and loving parents an Autistic child can grow up to live a normal life just like anyone else. Don't worry too much about school or activities, just build your relationship and understanding.

In Australia we have an organisation called Autism Australia, and that did wonders for my development as a kid. Doctors still don't know that much about Autism, so try and find one that is familiar with Autism, not just normal medical problems.

Don't ever feel down. You might be raising the next Einstein (who is widely considered to have been a high functioning Autistic) and should consider it a blessing not a curse. Savant Autistics can go on to become the greatest mind in their fields.

I'll go through your question piece by piece to help you out as much as possible:

Autistic children are off in their own little world, and shouldn't be expected to conform. It's normal for a child to go off exploring on their own, and Autistic children learn best at their own pace. ADD or ADHD are also common in sort of a package deal with Autism, so sitting still and focusing is hard.

Language was actually my strong suit, I was reading at a seventh grade level in grade one and begging for more work to show off. Your child just might not be suited to making full sentences, and it could even be something as simple as a "why say more than I have to" mindset.

As he grows up he'll rely on you a little less each year, but will never truly outgrow it. I can say right now that with him as your only son you'll have your hands well and truly full. I wouldn't recommend more kids.

Three years? That's actually pretty funny. Maybe some other disorders, but it working for Autism in three years is quite the stretch. Even though I'm considered extremely high functioning, I never adapted to mainstream school. Don't let that get you down, I spent a lot of time with my mother and am currently getting a grade ten equivalent now when I've got better control over my Autism, so it's not like school is the most important thing. Some one on one home schooling is a good idea though.

I'm sorry to hear that you're not doing well with money. My mother married a deadbeat who took all of her savings so we lived off of the bare minimum. Some cheap alternatives to therapy would be learning about autism, and strategies for it, yourself. In the end, you are probably going to be more effective as a familiar person than some doctor.

And remember, it's Autistic SPECTRUM Disorder. No two children are exactly alike, but can be quite similar.

For reading I recommend The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It's a very accurate portrayal of Autism.

I'd love to help you more, but I don't know much about Filipino services for Autism or even that you have enough understanding of English to be able to read any books or web services I could recommend to you.

If you need ANY more help, please contact me. I would be beyond happy to help you in any way I can.

Will sadly there is no cure for autism. The good news is it won't really hold him back. Did you know that Albert Einstein had autism? Just goes to show people with can do just about anything.

One of my best friends is 14 now and has had Autism for as long as I have known her. She attends mainstream high school (like me) and went to a regular primary school too. She still goes to see a councillor once a week though. I does help her. She finds it easier to offload her problems onto someone else - especially someone she doesn't particularly know that well.

I'm sure things will get better in time for your son. Everybody I know accepts her for who she is - Autism or not. Sure, some people can be b*tches and take the p*ss but in life, there's always somebody to out you down. My friend has now become very independent and has become her own person who still does rely on her parents from time-to-time (but who doesn't at our age?)

I was horrified that KimmyS actually said to put tobasco on this person's child's fingers to make her stop biting her nails. Anyone agree that that is pure child abuse? I hope that parents of grade schoolers and all children know that nail biting is not going to kill a kid. I would find out what is making my child want to bite in the first place. Tobasco can make a little tongue swell up and children can die from that. What do you think? I think that putting stuff on their fingers is only going to make the problem worse. If it really is a problem. It is actually a comfort habit. Why are children having to comfort themselves? Isn't that a parent's job? Find out why first. That is where I would focus my attention. Do you agree or not? Yes, it is considered abusive. Ask a CPS worker. In the USA, it is considered abuse and yes, small chidren have died from having tobasco put in their little mouths!!!!!! Their tongues swell up and block their air passage And Traci? I did point out that there are other reasons kids do these things and I also pointed out that these types of things need to be handled with compassion, not punishment!!! Germs? Kids are little germ factories. Do you all wash all your kids toys down every hour to make sure they are germ free? Get real. Some of these answers are right on the money. And some most certainly are not.

So today I went in for an interview and I was going in for the 2nd interview by the head chief executive. now this is where it got weird, so she asked me about my previous jobs and said how much she liked that product over that product. then she started talking about her daughter? an her divorce ...then how she didn't finish college because she was making more money doing what she did for this company ... then she talked about how her teenage daughter is a handful... I just played it cool thinking she was using some sort of psychology thing to trick me into saying something stupid. the interview ended and she seemed happy an I was escorted to the door... now I'm freaking confused? is this normal behavior for an executive? like it felt like she was going to burst into tears at one point and tell me her life problems... is this normal? was she trying to see how I react or something?

Basically- no degree, although I have tried completing one in the past and stopped because of physical and mental health issues which were overwhelming to deal with along with going to classes full time. I'm not stupid and I am quite articulate. I am 23 and have only worked for about two years retail in high school and stopped working to go to university. I worked a few months in 2010 retail after I dropped out but it was only a seasonal position, and the only reason why I have not been able to constantly work is because of mental health issues. I had also tried going back to community college during my free time since i left university in 2008/9 and I had panic attacks while in community college, which made my anxiety worse from then on. Well recently I met a good doctor and he prescribed me some meds that are stabilizing my moods and I feel the best I've felt in years, and I'm ready to work. Thing is, I don't know how to get a job now since I've spent literally years being depressed and anxious doing nothing. I don't really have anything to put on my resume, and I never finished my AA degree either. All I've done is cashiering and although I do the job well and I get promoted easily when I do these jobs because I'm a hard worker and I try to go above and beyond what they ask of me,which is the attitude I have no matter what kind of work I'm doing as long as I'm getting paid. But I hate cashiering because it's too easy and I want a job that is more interesting. Any suggestions for me on how to get a job that is NOT Retail with the type of background I have right now? I also realize I have to go to college to get certain types of jobs, I am talking about what I can do right here right now.

Recently I have overlooked for a project at work and I am unable to accept it why? I am hard working, dedicated, maintain a very professional decorum, very cordial with my colleagues and bosses, give respect to one and all. Still people who take the p***, argue with managers, gossip mongers have been selected for some very responsible positions at work. I seriously can't get my head around it why, why unprofessional people who have no work ethics being selected over me, whereas I have a track record of excellent performance and never shy away from any work my manager ask me to do? I am at my lowest point and not getting hold of my manager to ask the question why not me, why them who can't even bother? I am feeling like a complete loser, giving years to this place, building my performance, trust and this is how I get rewarded. Why my life is so shit, anything I wish for turns to dust?

So I have a nice white button up shirt, business skirt and pants, and a suit jacket. I'm applying for a software development job and I'm very short and can look young so I'm trying to look adult, yet professional. I'm also attractive so I'm trying not to look too sexy. For the career fair I'm thinking of wearing just my nice shirt and a skirt with low heels. My reasoning being it's approachable and attractive without going overboard since the career fair hosts are mostly younger male recent grads. I want to be remembered but not intimidating. For my interviews I was thinking pants, suit jacket (power suit). My reasoning being it'll be older execs and HR people (mostly women) so less sexy with the pants but more powerful with the suit jacket. What do you think?!

I'm applying online for a job at Debenhams. It's just a temporary part time job but I have no previous retail experience, just in customer service, and I am finding some of the questions rather difficult. Our commitment to training and development encourages our people to grow their futures with us. If successful in joining our team, how will you become an expert at what you do? and At Debenhams, our people make all the difference to our customers. If you were a Stock Movement Adviser with us, how would our customers know that you are focused on their individual shopping experience? Any help in answering these questions would be greatly appreciated, many thanks!

I am in the process of planning my own wedding and I am having a fantastic time doing so. I have always enjoyed planning things: group vacations for my friends and I, road trips, etc... I could be described as a slight control freak and I am a perfectionist. I know I would exceed, and enjoy my career, if I were to make this a possibility. How do I do it? How do I get my name out there? How much do event planners charge for their services? I have a lot of questions, and hope that people who are self employed would be able to give me some pointers on getting my business up and running. Thank You in advance for your time and help.
