Comparing the navy to horses and bayonets is that accurate?
The same US Navy that enforces all UN laws of the sea, protects major shipping lanes and cargo of ALL nations, Enforces nuclear proliferation resolutions on countries such as Iran and North korea. The US Navy that delivers control of the sea, Air superiority, and ground troops anywhere in the world within days. The US Navy that provides humanitarian aid and disaster relief for almost every major disaster on every continent with exception to Antarctica. The same US Navy that provides ballistic missile defense to our allies around the world, projects power, and supplies nuclear deterrent capabilities anytime any where. Is this the same US Navy President Obama compared to guns and bayonets. On a planet whos surface is 70% water? We have 285 ships. At one time about 50% are actively engaging in the above. Since the president plans on increasing the Navy's role (You would think he reads his own policy) a role in which it is already stretched thin in executing is that remark appropriate? Does it appear as if the President might be a fool or just ignorant of his own policy?

I have 17yrs in the Navy. The Navy is the only forward deployed branch. That means we are out war, or no war. I've lived on 2 carriers. They need tenders, and small boys for defense. Mr. Obama was wrong! A carrier can launch birds, but is defenseless to an attack from a small ship, or boat. In the gulf the biggest... More

obama was claiming that Romney wants to bring back the battleship. This is, like most of what obama says, a lie.

Our role has changed - We need to reduce foreign bases and instead operate a fleet of hospital and service ships in the Navy and keep the warship number about the same as at present

Neither. President Obama was belittling Governor Romney when Governor Romney said the number of Navy ship was at its lowest since 1916. While the US may have fewer ships but those ships do more. That is why President Obama was talking about the capabilities of an aircraft carrier. You cannot compare the ships of today... More

Navy ships today have a thousand percent more firepower then they did before WW1. Many are nuclear powered so they have unlimited range and sail a twice the speed as older ships. The use of satellites has given our navy intel that in pre WW1 was science fiction. Not only do we have ballistic missile submarines, we... More
