In your opinion, which rifle caliber is better suited for self defence in an apocolypse world?

7.62x39 or the .223? I like the .223 because you can carry much more ammunition and it has great ballistics, but the 7.62x39 is just a beast, its brute force, so I don't know which caliber I would rather have in a post apocalyptic world, which would you rather have?

The 223 for close up and 308, 30-06, or 8mm for distance. The AK47 requires much practice to use accurately. Which--given certain situations, you may not have the time to take good aim.

The reliability inherent in the 7.62 X 39 makes it a better choice in apocalyptic enviorment

In the event the world ends in demise rifles will only have a short duration value until the ammo is gone. So renewable resources that you can obtain in your local will be what is best and that will take us back to the dark ages. The long bow, swords, spears and mallets will be the rule.

I prefer the 7.62x39mm. The .223 limits your hunting to small game only, whereas the 7.62 can take medium sized game like deer and hog. That will furnish a meal for you and whoever you are traveling with in your survival group... More

Sounds like you're comparing the 5.56x45 with the 7.62x39. My suggestion is to buy the ammo that fits your gun. Seriously, the 7.62 isn't "such a beast". Let's look at the ballistics... More

Choose the one you can reload yourself (make your own ammo), Any other is useless after you've used all your shots

Whichever one you can buy and store the most ammo for. And whichever one anyone you plan to "survive" with has.
