What is the most ethical way to fire an intern?

That question was first asked a week ago but I reasked it for more insights. This is the development of the case: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnphWwVXe96a291WDfkC1UHsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20121119062800AAvIraI Since the company rules no longer match the internship requirement and the majority of the staffs have voiced their opinions that I should fire the intern. The creative director/one of the owners which is his supervisor got into a heated debate with the board of directors regarding the issue but he's finally giving up. I just contacted the representative of the university and she said that although my company violated the internship rules but they would not go as far as challenging us legally if we talk to the intern calmly and reasonably. And we have to persuade him to take another year and doing internship somewhere else. This is still on the planning stage, the intern has not been fired nor given any warnings yet. But the intern will be informed as soon as he finishes the projects he's currently been assigned to.
