How can a poor Black visual artist find ways to develop their talent in NY?
I need some tips to pass on to Black artists. In the daily grind where you have work, family commitments, and other demands on time and money that limit your means, what is available to help "working poor" Black visual artists develop? Many affordable programs have a cap on age, or are available for people who are jobless, elderly, or disabled. Most educational institutions are expensive and have a stifling cult-like worship of Dead White male/European artists, making it hard to get the guidance to develop a voice and style as a Black artist. Their approach is slow, Eurocentric, and almost robotic. It frustrates the Black soul. Their teachers go into attack mode against people who don't conform, and true artists have trouble pretending. Those who sell paint, clay, and other materials want an arm and a leg for it. This limits experimentation. Poor Black artists also struggle with storing their work, with gallery exposure, with convincing family that art is a wise thing to invest in. Many people believe they should cut out that part of their soul because big money does not support the development of Black artists. However, once skills are developed, it is much easier to take on these challenges. Limited ability to travel and to break routines can also make artists feel trapped and depressed and make them reckless. Also, having to stay competitive in the job that keeps a roof over your head makes it hard to do the necessary research, practice, and soul searching to develop. One artist I know works 15 hours, and barely gets by; and comes home to a wife that has only a few hours to see him before the next day's rat race. Any suggestions from your knowledge and experience on how Black artists can develop? 1 hour ago - 1 week left to answer.
