I don't feel Medical School is right for me anymore and I feel bad about it? Help?
This whole week after shadowing multiple docs in my 2nd year of college after graduating 4.0 from HS and keeping my 4.0 GPA in college, I'm still unconvinced that the doctors I've shadowed actually enjoy their jobs. They work 9 hours a day, 6 days a week, and sometimes work all 7, and I sometimes don't feel like that's necessarily right for me. I'm currently a biology major, and even thinking about switching to a chemistry major. I've developed an interest in postsecondary education because it really seems like with all the research and college education, that the educators really do love their jobs. They also have a life outside of school (I think?) which would make it fun too. I just feel that going toward this path would let everyone down whos supported me? I've gotten multiple scholarships from Mayo Clinic and hospitals, as well as gotten invited into Minnesota's Future Doctors Scholars Program. What do you guys think? Please no childish comments.. I still would like to go get a PhD because that seems fun, but I guess I'm not sure yet..there is WAY too much stuff on my mind..and with classes I need to confirm soon I need to figure out what I want to do before I waste any time and money.

Surgeons can make about 200k per year, no other degree allows you to make that much.

Honestly, I don't think anyone can answer this question for you and I think you know that. You're looking for reassurance which is fine. I'm in a similar boat to you. Shadowing is a good way to see whether or not you'd like a certain field, and it looks like its deterred you from becoming a doctor. There's no shame in wanting to change your career path, many students do... More

One thing you might want to consider is the type of doctor you shadowed. Someone like an ER physician would have a way more stressful job/schedule than, say, a dermatologist. Different specialties can result in very different hours and experiences, so think about that... More

Before you make this decision, start looking into other types of doctoring, as well as the possibilities for an MD/PhD - research, etc. See what you think after a bit more investigation... More
