Things to do in Connecticut and surrounding states?

We're planning the trip for 2014 so I will be 18 when I go so I wont be able to drive over there (you have to be 21 to rent a car I think) so anywhere that has completely different culture than england, I've always wanted to visit maine and see the wildlife there so how can I do that, and how expensive will it be to see the attractions in new york? the trips being funded by savings from my waitressing job so I wont be rolling in money especially after plane tickets, though I have somewhere to stay for free Also will I be able to go to a high school football game as its something I've always wanted to see after watching all the cliche films and tv programs haha Thanks for your help :)
