Why do people seem to think that gun control and more guns are mutually exclusive?

Imagine a world where everyone who can pass a background check has a low-capacity handgun, a world with no assault weapons or gun free zones, a world where armed security officers stand at every corner. I'm not necessarily arguing that we should live in that world, but why isn't anyone else arguing that we should (or at least some variant of it)? The gun debate seems so black and white.

Everything is black and white. We can't ever have a real discussion about guns because the other side always says that "now isn't the time". And if we do decide to talk about it, the other side insists that gun control means "absolute gun bans". Unfortunately, this is the case with nearly every issue. We can't debate... More

To me the "gun," debate is anything but clear cut. Should the same restrictions apply to deep urban dwellers, as to those living in the forested countryside? As to arms for the mass public; there are countries like that, required military service for people quite young seems to go hand in hand with it.
