I want to teach special education, GT, ect. What extra classes do i take?

I'm about to graduate with my associates degree in agricultural science and I'm transferring to another school next year to work on my bachelors (and most likely masters) in Agricultural Education.

I was also wondering about teaching special education classes, gifted and talented classes, model un, being a counselor, being a principal, things of that nature.

Are there special certificates you can get or certain courses to take? I think Special Ed is another degree plan all together but I wasn't sure.

I know when I was in school I had one teacher who taught Gifted and Talented in our Jr. High, then Art and Model UN (which is technically a gt class) in our high school.

And what do you need to do to teach AP Classes?

And if you know of any other certificates and things of that nature that can add on to what I can do as a teacher (like gt) please let me know! I'm interested in being able to do as much as possible.

My long term goal is to be a vice principal or principal, or maybe even a counselor. I know all the principals I had were teachers for years before they changed positions. Do you need your masters and a special certificate?

You have a long academic path ahead. After you finish with you Masters in Ag Ed, you will have many more classes ahead in Special Ed. Your are right that it is a complete major with many classes. You would have to talk with a university admissions counselor to see if you would be able to earn those SPED credits and do SPED student teaching as part of a masters program, or if you would be better to earn another bachelors because this is a new area to you. If you want to be a school counselor, that is another entire series of classes. After doing all that, you would have to enter a program to earn your principalship papers. You have at least ten years of schooling ahead to do all of that, assuming full-time work. If you get a job in Ag Ed and then start all this part-time, I would estimate a lot longer than ten years to finish it all.

While teaching in a high school, you would have to take special training which is offered once or twice a year, in order to be certified to teach an AP class. You would probably do this while already teaching, and the school district would pay to send you for the special certification. You would have to already be certified to teach that subject, such as math, history, or English. However, I never heard of AP in Ag Ed in a high school, and I don't see any indication in your plan of earning certification to teach another subject that would have AP.

I suggest that you spend some time on university websites to start to learn about the bachelors, masters, and programs that are ahead for you. Find out about the admission requirements and coursework in each area to get a basic knowledge of each course of study. This is quite an ambitious plan, and very expensive. Good luck to you in your endeavors.

I am applying for teaching jobs and sending out resume packets. I know that I should include a cover letter and a resume, but should I include letters of recommendation, my teaching certificate, transcripts? Should I wait on some of that stuff until I'm called for an interview? Also should I include a list of references with my resume or wait until that is requested? Thanks so much for the help!
