What to expect for an Admin Assistant position?

Okay. I work in a fairly basic, public-sector job as an administrative assistant making 13.50/hr+benefits before taxes (my take home is about 1,400$/month). I have a possible job opportunity coming up where I might be able to move into the private sector as a direct assistant to an insurance agent to handle his office while he is out. There has been no wage discussed by either of us - but I would not switch unless there was a definite improvement in wage, because besides anything else my work commute doubles from 20 miles round-trip to 40 miles round trip. I am hoping (I did not state this to the possible employer) for about $15/hr (if benefits, great, if not... I have avoided thinking about for now), simply to both provide improved quality-of-life-spending money, as well as to be able to afford the extra gas. A very good friend of mine feels that I am expecting way way too high of a wage here, and that I should not be so concerned with the 20 extra miles in commute because "it's not that far," which has me worried. Based on my research, a lot of admin assistant jobs are either 12$/hr (and that's rare) or they are between $15-$18 for a position depending on the level of experience held by the employee. What is the average wage to expect for an Administrative Assistant (with or without an Associates degree), and is my hope for $15 too high?
