Why does nobody my age care about the future?

I'm 16 years old. I don't understand why everyone my age only cares about their stupid phones and ipods. Whenever I want to get into a discussion about cool new future travel methods or talking about augmented reality or augmenting your body (like in deus ex) they might just laugh. One time I showed off some (very little) of my knowledge about space that only takes a little bit of research to find out and they called me a nerd/neek. I mean it's really not that nerdy to know the names of let's say... Jupiter's moons (Io, Ganymede, Europa, Callisto) yet they couldn't give the lsightest shit. All they care about is facebook and texting and sharing f*****g photos. They couldn't give two shits about the far future until somebody actually creates a programme to dumb it down for them. I can bet you that none of them ever do their own research about future technologies and space (like the colonization of Mars) It's not like I'm even that amazing with my knowledge of technology and space. You know what the funny thing is? Is that they actually do physics and I don't do any sciences. I'm also p****d that the UK/US government don't care all that much about sustainability and future tech. No they would prefer to worry about fighting some stupid war against people who would never actually launch any sort of invasion against the country. Why not reduce the expenditure and just create a larger home front? Then you could spend money on eco-friendly travel solutions and serious thought on space colonization. It just really annoys me that the only people who really know detailed knowledge about these things are the online community. But as soon as I watch any tech expo, they just discuss the latest flat screen TV or phone (which come out every 5 months or so) does this not piss you off? Please give me your thoughts and thank you for reading my rant.

Because this is how the world works kid. It's great that you can think outside of the box, so keep on doing so. Our society is driven by consumerism and control. Everything you are taught, told, or made to believe exists purely to control you, to keep you confined within non existent walls. Consumerism has people... More

"I mean it's really not that nerdy to know the names of let's say... Jupiter's moons (Io, Ganymede, Europa, Callisto)" Yes it is. I mean, I'm in calculus at age 14, go to month long math camps, and am very geeky, yet I did not know that. Sorry. I do care about the future. I work to improve it.

Kids are traditionally stupid and always have been. It's because they're kids. It's not that they're evil or anything, they just haven't been around long enough to be anything but dumb and ignorant, usually. Some catch on quicker than others... More
