Why does the North and South down on each other so much?
I understand that we have our differences and "stereotypes" and such. But come on! Do we really have to compare each other to seem superior. It's true Northerners tend to be strong-willed, honest, and hold down some decent jobs. But I also think they are a little blunt at times, morals slightly askew, and think they are superior to the South just because they won the Civil War. On the other side, it's true that Southerners are hospitable to visitors, polite, and willing to work whatever job they can find. But they can be a little judgemental at times, slightly weird when it comes to advice, and can be competitive at nearly everything. Now to the stereotypes. Not all the women of the North are terrible cooks nor are all the men fat and lazy. Not all the women of the South are stay-at-home moms nor do all the men feel they need a girl mate to feel complete. Not all Northerners have terrible pronunciation whereas not all Southerners have bad grammar. Not all Northerners walk to work nor do Southerners always have to drive a long way to work. Why can't we all just see the good in both sides? The North holds many of the most important businesses, people that dress professionally, and some of the finest darn Italian food you will ever consume. Plus they have White Castle. The South has beautiful land, excellent place to look for a nice Southern man/woman to make you swoon like you're in a fairytale, and some of the best god dang barbecue you will ever put in your belly. Plus they have Whataburger.

Great question & great writing. I agree with your way of thinking. I think a lot of the bashing all reflects back to the Civil War. I lived in the North for fifty-nine years & during those years, I never heard anyone bash the South. I recently moved to deep south & I've only heard that part of a nearby city, will not... More

I'm just grateful that I'm in California... I happen to looove all the various Southern accents and some tasty, fast-pluckin' bluegrass. I'm not sure we're even aware out here of half the stereotypes you listed. It all seems like really old bad blood from the civil war era. Nonsense. Let's play some banjo and have us... More

this is all quite true. if we would all just stop trying to GENERALIZE other people, and accept that we are ALL individuals, and make our own decisions for our lives, then we could learn to live together in harmony with our fellow man as God intended us... More

It also can be because of our different political parties and stereotypes spoken about both sides of the country. Also our cultures are different. I bet no one in the north has ever heard of foods like "Jumbo" and "Kush-kush" our accents are unique as well.
