How to become entry level diesel mechanic?

There's a job opening at a local Cummins shop for an entry level diesel mechanic. The job requirements don't include any sort of a degree other than HS diploma. I don't have a degree beyond HS and I've never worked with engines, but this job really interests me. What are they looking for in this type of a position? Do they typically hire people who don't have a degree related to the job? Are women more/less likely to receive a job offer?
