What does it take to become an engineer? Can I start at community college?

So a little backstory: Just graduated with my BA in psychology. Not bashing the degree but not only is it not very marketable, but psych/soft science just isn't what I want to do. I had no clue what I wanted to do after HS and just chose that because psych is interesting. Well now I've graduated. I have a ground-floor job at a major aerospace company. I have finally realized what my passion is and what I want to do: Mechanical engineering. My question is: What exactly does it take for me to be qualified to apply for a mechanical engineer position? My local community college has a "Mechanical Engineering Technology" associates. Is this a good place to start? It's Columbus State Comm. College so it's pretty big. Here's the program page: http://www.cscc.edu/academics/departments/engineering/mechanical-engineering.shtml What do you think? Is this where I should start? What about ABET certification? Do you need a bachelor's for that? My plan would be to go to the community college and get my associates, and then go on to get my bachelor's in ME. Any advice/experience/suggestions are appreciated.
