how can I be a preschool teacher in California?

Hi, I want to be a preschool teacher in California. After I graduated from high school, I earned Early Childhood Education Certificate from college and it was 18 units. Someone said that I cannot teach the children alone in the classroom with the certificate, but only can help them as an assistant teacher. I want to know about the difference between the certificate and license clearly. I don't know how to get the ECE license. Also I am planning to achieve associate degree. Can I be a preschool teacher after I achieve it? Or do I need to achieve Bachelor's degree? It is so confusing, so I want someone who is knowledgeable on the early childhood education.
