How can I ever afford a house and the upkeep?

I'm 27 years old and I have a $40,000 a year job. I bring in about $2200 a month income after taxes. However after I pay for my car my car insurance my phone bill and my student loans which are over $500 a month I don't have enough left over to afford a mortgage In a somewhat decent area. I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on how to afford a house with that kind of income?

There are 2 ways to solve this problem. Earn more money or spend less each month. You didn't say where you lived and this makes a huge difference in housing. You need to cut your debt, the student loans and the car payment. The only way to do this would be in increase income and use this money to pay off debt.
