Ways to make first 3 moves in a chess game?
How many ways can the two players make their first 3 moves in a chess game? I'm counting moves here as 1 move by each player, so that would be 6 moves in total. I see this as more of a combinatorics problem than a game problem, so I've posted this in Mathematics. Most mathematicians know at least the rudiments of chess, so it seems appropriate. I guess nobody really wants to work on this. The answers that just cover the first 20 possibilities for the first move are completely obvious, and not of much value. Don't know why people bother with that. I asked for 3 moves, because that is where it really does get complicated.

The First move is either 1 of 2 knights or any of 8 pawns.

6c3 =6!/(3!3!) =(6*5*4*3!)/(3!3!) =20

for move 1, there are 8 pawns that can each move in 2 different places, then there are 2 knights that can also move in 2 different places. That gives a total of 20 for P1 and 20 for P2... More
