What do you think about teachers being friends with students on facebook?
I've recently become friends on Facebook with my physics teacher and my mum isn't happy about that. She wants me to unfriend him because it's unprofessional and it's not a teachers job to be the students friend. However, and I've explained this to my mum but she won't listen, that he's my go to guy. He's my unofficial councillor, I’ve had a lot of things happen to me lately and I just need to vent. I've had the stress of exams, family problems and my ex girlfriend tried to kill herself over the weekend so I just needed someone to talk to, and I can talk to him. He's one of few people I feel comfortable enough with to open up about these things and just about anything and it's been a big help to me. And today after venting about my ex, he suggested that we become friends on Facebook so if something comes up, I don't need to wait for school and I can just message him when need be. And I thought this was a great idea so I added him but my mum saw this and has given me a lecture about student/teacher friendships and has told me to unfriend him. Now I’m not going to do that but what do you guys think? Who do you side with on this one, me or my mum?

It's actually banned in my school districts teachers cannot connect with students via social media websites (facebook, Twitter, instagram, etc). Personally, I'm on your side. I used to have my IT teacher added on facebook (actually a lot of the students in my class did) and it was a great help for my exams. I wasn't close or comfortable enough to discuss anything personal, but knowing she was available if any of us had any issues was nice. My mom can also be... More

I feel it's perfectly fine! Most of the teachers will friend you as long as you won't cuss at my school. If you feel that your teacher is one of the only people you can talk to, go ahead. It's much better than hurting yourself or worse!

Completely inappropriate. A teacher can be friendly but he shouldn't be your friend.
