How hard is it being a software developer?

I have decided in wanting to pursue the career of becoming a software developer because it seems like an interesting making programs before they are out. I'm a freshman going to become a sophomore and I need to know if this is the career I need to pursue. What classes in high school will prepare me for this job? What college classes will I need to take? (Any additional information will be helpful and how much is your beginning pay once you've got a good job firm.)
