What would one need to Immigrate from the US to Canada?

I am an Industrial Maintenance (Speciality in Electrical work, PLCs, Motor Control and circuits but am well versed in all aspects of Electrical systems). I have a Vocational Diploma and a Certification through NCCER, who also operates in Canada. I was thinking of applying for a Student Visa and going to a trade program over there and after finishing, trying to become a Permanent Resident and eventually a citizen. I live in Buffalo and have many Canadian friends. I go there for weeks at a time and I simply like Canada more than the US. Where do I need to start. I know it matters that I have a clean background and I have no criminal history. The closest thing is a speeding ticket.

Yes it does matter that you have a clean background & clean record. Those are both grounds for denial if they are bad, so that's a good start. Here's a tip: Search in areas that need skilled workers. Places like the north, Sask, Manitoba etc. You increase your chances of getting an offer if you expand your search.
