Can a hospital fire a RN because she holds a NP license?

My wife has been working as a RN at a hospital in Wisconsin for 10+ years. Recently she got her Master's degree and passed her boards to become a Nurse Practitioner. She is continuing to work in her RN job until she is able to find a NP position. However, the hospital has informed her that because she is now licensed as a NP she will be terminated in 90 days. Nobody has been able to give us a reason for that besides "hospital policy." She does still hold a RN license. Is this legal? If they do terminate her, would we have grounds for a wrongful termination case?

if she has a contract, either personally or through a union, read it. It is she has no contract, then anyone can be fired or can quit for any reason or no reason.
