Does an artist need to study many jobs?

I am not an artist myself but I do read comics, anime and animation during my free time and i am interested in how an artist of these few categories I mentioned actually work them out. If this comic artist want to write a story based on mecha, he needs to study robots and engineerings? Or a story about doctor stuffs, he needs to study medicines? You know those equipments and the drawings of operations in order to make sense? It feels like this artist job has to learn so many courses in order to accomplish a story he wants to share. Makes me feel like saluting them haha. What do you think? Perhaps can let me know more?

The writer/artist needs to do their research, yes. They don't need actual schooling in any of the subjects but should know where to go to find the information, or who to talk to for verification. Most artists in the genre read a ton of stuff and have wide interests.

Artists are students of life, anyway. So they're predisposed to learn. They enjoy it. It's just another step in the creation process. You learn the hair styles of a hair dresser before you paint a scene, write a scene, sculpt it, weave a wig, etc.
