Can employers look up how much your wage or salary was at previous jobs?

Yes and no, it depends how ethical is the company. Usually when the hiring process happens through HR department they won't ask this kind of question, cause they know it's one of the illegal questions of the job interview. Your future employer doesn't have right to know what was your previous salary or wage. However... More

Yes, they simply pick up the phone and ask them. Takes 30 seconds to verify and a VERY dumb thing to lie about.

if they call your previous employer they find out , it is not an illegal question it is a ver common question, now if you are asking if there is some file or database they access to find out the answer is no

At least in NJ this answer is dead WRONG. I have been job hunting for many months and EVERY time I have had a response to my resume the question about prior/expected salary has been asked! One application I filled out asked for prior salary and even said "Be honest, we will verify." Is EVERYONE breaking the law?
