Junior Art Director Job Questions & Answers

Sort by:
I'm in the process of revamping my art portfolio and I'm trying to figure out exactly what to do. Should I bound it, keep it in clear sleeves, add text descriptions, design a background template for each page? I've seen very few art portfolios and need some direction in making my own. I want to know what others have done to land their design job or what hiring professionals find interesting in a portfolio to bring back that interviewee. I'm currently a junior designer and to get the job I used a black leather, zip binder with clear sleeves inside to hold my artwork. The artwork was printed on regular 8 1/2" by 11" white paper. So a lot of white space was seen. At the time, I liked my portfolio but now looking at it, I find it very weak presentation wise. I doubt it will help me get to that next level if I keep it the way it is. I want to make it stand out but in all the RIGHT ways. I hope to work somewhere that will let me make art from scratch and eventually as an art director.

Hi guys! I'm writing a short novel that is set with the work colleagues of a graphics design company. What are some job titles within a company like that one? The front of house receptionist? Accounts? Graphic designers? The big boss? The PA? All help would be appreciated.

I am currently a junior in high school (also taking classes at the local college to get ahead) and want to have a career in some sort of computer based designing, but I can't choose. The two I'm mainly considering are web design and graphic design. I personally would prefer being in graphic design, but I hear that the income isn't that great, and I'm not that creative or decisive, so I'm leaning towards web design. I'm just not that sure, though. I'm trying to find out class and skill requirements, annual salary, and maybe more details about each career. Also personal input would be great, too!

I am a junior who has been looking into what colleges I should be preparing for, and these two are both in my area and well known. Both look great, but I am having trouble figuring out which one I should ultimately pursue: Art Center or Otis. I am planning on going into gaming design or something of the sort, and I need help. Any advice or suggestions?

Just curious what marketing folks out there think is an equitable salary for a special case of combining several roles into one job within an in-house marketing department. These roles include production of print, mail and email jobs + graphic design + coordination of all projects (trafficking)? The department serves 3 related companies, each having their own marketing communication specialist. This role would coordinate all creative services staff to complete jobs (trafficking) as well as handle all vendor relationships (sending jobs to print and mail house), plus provide graphic design for print and web. The experience level is 6 years as graphic designer and production plus bachelors degree, (Liberal arts but not fine arts or design). Thank you very much for your interest and input.

I'm a junior at a very small high school and have never been exposed to any design courses, other than a small graphic design unit I took in my tenth grade technology class. This small unit was enough to make me want to pursue graphic design as my career. I've been thinking about visual communications as a major as well, but I'm just not sure. I don't want to be completely unprepared, and go to college, and wind up being behind everyone else.

I was wondering wether there was more request on the market for Illustrators or Game Designers. I know a game designer might get some freelance illustration job offers, and an illustrator might get to do some concept art, also as freelance job offer, but let's ignore that for now.
