High Voltage Electrician Job Questions & Answers

I'm studying a HNC at the moment, hopefully moving on to an engineering degree in a few years time. When I first left school I wanted to become an electrician, when completing the level 3 certificate, I thought that I might as well try out electrical engineering, the thing I didn't like about electrical installation was that many of the people doing it were constantly negative, they'd always complain. It kind of seems that, if I were to work as an electrician, I'd become like them. Ever since I've been on this higher education course (HNC Electrical Engineering), I've enjoyed it much more, the people seem smarter and much more positive. However I'm not sure which subdiscipline to go into. I like the idea of telecommunications engineering, control engineering and instrumentation engineering. Power Engineering is dealing with very high voltage, i'm generally an anxious person so I think that knowing I could could get a huge electric shock would make me very nervous. Telecommunications Engineering is apparently a good career to choose as it is in demand, we will always need telecommunications, I'm not sure what the work would be like though, I haven't learnt much about it yet as I'm in my first year. I enjoy using computers, I'm interested in programming, I want to use my electrical knowledge in combination with programming, I enjoy solving complex problems, I'd like a career that would allow progression, because I know that I'm prepared to work very hard at something I will enjoy. Also I'd like to be highly paid, but I think that's just as important as enjoying the job.

We read somewhere that we don't need the neutral line for the high-voltage configuration. We wired black to L1 and red to L2 and connected the ground. When we tried it out it didn't work.

I'm wanting to get into a good apprenticeship program, in a good field that I can stick with for a long time. Having very little construction experience, I'm having a tough time choosing between a Commercial Carpenter or a Commercial Electrician, or perhaps there is even something out there I don't know of that's better. Could you tell me which you think is better overall, and why? What are the plusses and minuses of each? Thanks.

I'm a little dumbfounded as to where to start with track lights. I have a small shop (about 15x30' in dimensions) and would like to install two rows of track lighting along each wall. My current track lighting was bought at Lowe's and doesn't work very well--I have to get on a ladder almost every morning and fidget with the tracks to get them to turn on. My electrician told me that this is because the tracks are cheap and he suggested that I purchase a Lightolear system. The Lightolear track heads are very expensive though, so I would like suggestions as to other high quality brands. Ideally I would like track heads that take regular e27 bulbs, but these seem very hard to find. Please help, any suggestions would be much appreciated!

My boiler, the tv, video, dvd player, playstation, washing machine, even the lights on extension leads that I have: In the past few months all the red/green "on" lights have blown (sometimes literally - scares the hell out of the wife), yet the appliances themselves work fine. Apart from having an anti-appliance-light ghost, what could be the problem and how to resolve it? Thanks.
