I have graduated few months ago and I am still looking for a job in the product development (design engineer). Since, I have some difficulties to found a job in that field, I was wondering what is the best alternative to acquire some experience. First, apply for technician level in design or try another field not closely related like HVAC engineer or maintenance engineer.

I am trying to get into the HVAC Engineering sector by working for a firm. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, I just took the PE exam and am trying desperately to work for a HVAC firm here in SC. I know AutoCAD very well, I have read the ASHRAE Fundamentals book (I also have the other 3 ASHRAE books and the McQuiston HVAC book as well which I plan to read through slowly), I took a state energy auditing course, I am now trying to learn how to use EQUEST for energy modeling, I worked for three years doing custom bus design for switchgear units, which is mostly an electrical application as opposed to a mechanical application. Anyways, I am doing this hopefully to update my resume next month to make myself more appealing (I also will know by then if I passed the PE exam). Is there anything else that I can/should do that would increase my chances of being hired for an entry-level position for a HVAC firm?

I have an undergrad M.E. degree but cannot really get a job. I want to work in HVAC or do something with energy. No masters programs in my state really deal with this field directly. I am considering just taking a few classes. Should I look into some trade school or university courses? Would any masters programs be good for this field?

Controls? Project Engineer? Technician? What do you have to do to become one and how well does it pay?
1 answer - Asked By: Verden - 4/7/2009
There is so many opinions out there about what the difference is between these two and which one has more oppurtunities and so on. I would love to know what the most direct difference is between these two fields, they seem so similar. Obviously the name Operations Manager hints at managing, but to me it seems like it is a more business-like approach to industrial engineering.
