 | Thinking of going to trade school for electrician so I can get started in an apprenticeship. I keep hearing that its extremely hard to get a union apprenticeship and that more and more people are forced to get jobs outside of the union. On the other side, I have heard you can't be a journeyman or a master electrician if you aren't in the union. Is this true?

 | I may have an apprenticeship with an electrical company, after completion would I be eligible for certification?
I have no idea, and I don't want to end up in a college course if i don't really need it. Though if it is recommended for certification I would rather have it, then not.
So can anyone help me out? Also, If you know what the following path to becoming a master electrician, I would greatly appreciate it!

 | There's a major skills gap in the US at the same time there's high unemployment, where the highly skilled jobs in this country are going unfilled because kids are being taught that college is the key. Why do we teach our children that learning how to do a highly skilled job (master electrician, master carpenter, master plumber, etc.) is "lesser" than getting a BA in Sociology?

 | I am a Master electrician including a strong knowledge of how electricity works, is generated etc. Being an commercial/residential electrician is no longer as easy as the job market is down along with construction etc. I have strong skills in plumbing, roofing etc. So here's the question...with my experience and skills, what other ways can I utilize them?
Just looking for ideas.
Thanks!

 | I am undecided whether I want to become a Electrical Engineer or a Master Electrician. I know that Master Electricians can start their own business (Contractor) or take responsibility on a project. Electrical Engineers are the ones who design electrical equipment and that design the electrical projects. I am just curious of which career would have more opportunity to make more salary. I also would like to know if an Electrical Engineer can also be a contractor like the Masters electricians.
Country: USA

 | We have an electrician that's not doing the job properly. He's left wires hanging from the ceiling, left light switches without faceplates, and spliced our cable wires.
Anyway, he was supposed to show up this morning, and didn't. Where can I report this electrician? He's (supposedly) licensed in Maryland. I know about the Board of Master Electricians and the Labor, Licensing, and Regulations board. can I report him to them?
Thanks!

 | I am considering a few different careers, one being a commercial/industrial electrician. What is the average yearly salary for a commercial/industrial electrician. My understanding is that they make more than residential electricians, is this true? Also I have heard there are more positions available for C/I as opposed to R. If you become a C/I electrician, can you also do residential work or must you get a seperate license and thus more training?
Thanks!

 | I'm planning to be an electrician but my parents insisted I get some sort of college education, whether it's necessary for the job I choose or not. I'm just wondering if a college (not university) level electrical engineering program is useful to me at all. Will it help me get a higher pay of the bat or anything worth mentioning? It's a 3 year program and I'd get an "advanced diploma" at the end of it which basically means I could use it to get into university to get a degree (which in all likely hood I wouldn't be doing).

 | I worked in hardware retail for 10 years. Did some electrical side jobs and I even wired a whole house completely (including the panel) and it passed 3 electrical inspections. If I know what I'm doing, why do I need to jump through all the same hoops? Are there any other avenues? Like maybe a company that trains a little but expect you to know the basics? Does anyone have any ideas?
