Panels? Can the structure support the extra weight and windload of the solar panels? When solar panels installers install solar panels on the roof, do they have to drill holes on the roof? If they don't do a good job sealing the holes, won't rainwater and melted snow leak through those holes? A roof will only last so many years. How do you repair or replace a roof if you have solar panels on the roof?

Not 'green' jobs, more like research jobs. Monitoring sunspots and gathering data, predicting solar storms, and things along that same line? Like, a solar scientist? How do I come into a job like this and what education would I need? Where do solar scientists get employed if not NASA? Only asking here because Google isn't doing a great job and thinks I mean 'solar panel installer' Ergh.

Do you have to take some course that certifies you to build solar panels or work in a factory that builds solar panels? Can you please fill me in on the information or send me a link to the complete info? Thanks Thanks Stephen M and Oliver for that information it helped. But I was also wondering what courses I would need to take or whatever if I wanted to install them or work in semiconductor production. Also what exactly is the pre-installation engineering work? Is it like what an electrician does?

I'm just starting to learn about solar panels and solar energy. I'm curious if it is possible to rig your house up to a few batteries charged by a few solar panel, and when the batteries are empty, it will switch to electricty. It would be handy if you didnt have to switch back and forth all the time when the batteries get low, if that makes any sense.

I am thinking about getting a major in Appropriate Technology, which is basically about sustainability and sustainable technologies like solar, wind, etc power. I'm curious though... how much can these systems be improved upon? I want to get into the engineering side of this field and be the guy who designs and improves them. I DO NOT want to be the guy who goes out and just installs solar panels all day. That's not where my interests lie. Can a solar panel or wind turbine still be improved upon? What are some other types of jobs I could get besides sustainability engineer or installer?
