I have recently qualified in 2D CAD city and guilds and I would like to become an architectural CAD technician. I am planning on studying the inventor course in parametric modelling. Is it just a case of writing to companies? Would a company take me on as a trainee and then how far can you progress in your career? Would they for example allow you leave to study?

I am a CAD technician and have worked for my company for 3 years. I have decided to change careers as I have been doing this job for 20 odd years and have had enough. I have accepted a job as a senior Youth Worker (I have always dreamed of doing this), but as I am here on a work permit I haven't handed my notice in yet because I haven't got my new permit yet. I had my appraisal today and felt really bad as I got a raise and a bonus (which is paid out at the end of November), but I cannot say anything yet as I don't know if I will get a new permit. If the permit does come through then I will stay here until the end of november. I really need the bonus but am not sure if they have to give it to me after I have resigned. It is down in writing as we are given a report following out appraisals. So can they take the bonus back or do they have to give it to me?

I have a diploma in graphic design and photography and no other qualifications, I have looked into courses In autocad but I am really not sure which one would be the best. There is City&Guilds autocad part time at my local college but it's only one evening a week, I am thinking to ask local Architect and engineering firms to do some experience to get my foot into the door. Any good advice out there? Thanks Alba

I am starting a new job tomorrow as a CAD technician for a steel fabrication company. Does anyone have any suggestions on what handy portable software or reference materials I could take with me on a flash drive. As far as i gathered at my interview, the company was using Strucad, Winsteel and Winbar to nest all the bars and plates from the drawings. What could I add to to that to help?

I am interested in a career working as a CAD Technician. I will be looking for work in either a construction or engineering company. Can anyone offer a rough idea of what the workload will be like in the beginning once I find a job? This will be an entry level position for me. The main thing I want to know is what percentage of my time will be working on the computer as opposed to being in meetings, going over briefs etc. Thanks!
