I graduated from a secretarial course with a certificate 8 years ago, and still can't get out of data entry and get an administrative assistant job. I am very proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook...PCs and Mac Computers, some accounting and payroll, excellent organizational skills, reliability, trustworthiness and high ethics (handling cash or account information), typing around 50 WPM, and 2 associates degrees. How do I get employers to see that I am overqualified for data entry, and perfectly suited for administrative assistant jobs?

Ok so it seems like I have been applying for a teaching assistant job at HISD forever. I have just recently finished my bachelors. I have faxed my resume, called schools to check on my application and everytime i get an answer that they have already picked someone. Do they only select people on "connection" basis. if anyone who is already a teaching assistant at HISD can you please share how you got the job and what should I do?

I'm trying to get a trading assistant job in Chicago. To be eventually able to trade stock options for the company. Problem is they want experience even for entry level jobs. So how do I get a job for which they want experience if I can't get the job? Seems like a catch 22. How are people supposed to get experience if nobody will give them a chance? How do I clerk for a firm? What firms in Chicago? What type of clerk position would I be looking for? Am I going to survive on the pay?

This field is different than any I've ever been in/interviewed for. Common sense dictates that a suit & tie for a kennel assistant job at an animal hospital is is too much. What should I wear to the interview? Is a dark colored khaki pant and a polo shirt ok?

I don't mean to disperage any administrative assistants out there but I honestly wouldn't want a career as an administrative assistant. I just think that only losers end up with that job title. Sorry I know that most of them are good people but I just dont think it that it leads to any legitimate career. Any how heres my story, I've been unemployed for 7 months now going on 8. It has been about 3 years since I graduated college with a psych degree. I've had such a shitty career history after college is not even funny! An overnight shift in a state psychiatric hospital and a 100?ommission sales job in the financial services industry which is what got me in this current situation. I've spent last few months looking for work and the reason why I've taken so long besides being a shitty job market is that I wanted to get the "right job" that will get me a great career track. Well, I've contacted the hiring manager in regards to a sales operation administrative posting that I saw. I figured that maybe I could get into actual sales if I proof to be good at the sales operations job. However, they came with a counter offer of an administrative assistant. I havent gotten a solid offer per se they just told me about the opportunity and to think about whether I would want to pursue it. After being unemployed for so long I don't think I have much of a choice. However, I want to make the right decision for my career. By the way the administrative assistant position is at a Big 4 firm. Also, ideally I would want a career as a business executive within sales. So should I pursue the Aministrative Assistant job? And perhaps maybe build my network within the firm, get an MBA and try to get promoted from within? Any advice would be helpful! P.S I know that I'm not a stellar candidate on paper but what I was hoping for was to get an entry level job within sales at a great company and work my way up. All I wanted was an entry level professional sales job.
