 | In large department stores - like Bloomingdales, Macy's, Barneys - what kind of jobs do they have available? Do such positions like floor managers exist and also, if two people were working in separate parts of the store (say, beauty and men's clothes), would there be 'higher' positions that they both could compete for and be promoted to?
Not sure if that made any sense, but I'd greatly appreciate some help!

 | I have an interview for a retail department manager job at a Shopko store on Wednesday. It's for the Apparel/Jewelry/Shoes section of the store. Has anyone had an interview for a Department Manager position in a not-quite-big-box retailer? What kind of questions should I be prepared to answer?
I'm coming from 5 1/2 years at my local Wal-Mart where I was a Customer Service Manager.

Any advice from anyone that's gone this route please.

I've heard it's a whole year that I'd have to wait or is it the normal six months?

 | I worked at a department store awhile back and I left on somewhat bad terms. Basically the manager wasn't doing their job and I didn't agree with how I (or others) were being treated so I left abruptly. I'm now interested in a position at the same company (but a different location). If I re-apply and say I never worked there will they know?

 | Assuming I am applying to Mcdonald's or Wal-Mart, does the application go to the corporate office and get filed away, or does the store manager actually see it? I have applied to countless restaurants, department stores, and miscellaneous (supposedly) open jobs, but I have never received a response. Is it a waste of time to try to apply to these places online (which is usually the only option) and, if so - how does anyone ever get hired?

 | I am somewhat disabled. I asked to speak to a store manager because there was a slight...I wouldnt even call it a problem...basically a store policy had changed. Because I am somewhat disabled, I was sitting in a chair at a department store and when the woman came up to me she did not start off rude, but because I was defending (and kindly debating my reasoning behind what I was there for) she got pretty LOUD and it was embarrassing...I wont even go into the details of what she was saying it was just unflattering, rude, and I thought disrespectful. Once she started getting a little loud (and hey...she may not have even noticed it)...I thought I better stand up from the chair I was in to make eye contact with the woman (we were now the same height which doesnt even matter)....and then she continued to be loud, so I spoke loud asking why she was raising her voice, and then said she would try to keep it down, but then did not.
Tomorrow morning I am going to talk to the main head guy of the entire store...who I know will side with me (if not - oh well - its fine - but things can be done with grace, respect, and fair customer satisfaction) anyways....even if I dont get what I want. Thanks beside the point now.
What is a good way for me to explain (it may be on paper or verbally....even If I talk to him over the phone I want to put in a formal compaint on this lady) -- I just think she needs a re-evaluation on customer service and respect.
I want it to be concise, to the point....all while mentioning these details and wahtever else may suit the bills. Help with the writing? Thanks.

 | I have recently been sacked from my job. i used to work on a concession in a department store. my manager has said that she will give me a very good referance and will not tell any future employers that i was sacked. i have an interview next week, if i tell them i handed in my notice and my manager backs this up is there any way that they can find out that i was sacked?

 | I'm 18 and just got my first job a week ago. I work at a department store and the wage is 8.00 an hour because I live in Massachusetts. I go off to college in August so at the most I'll be spending five months at that job. The manager said I probably won't get over 20 hours a week because I'm a temporary worker. Two of my friends have part time jobs too and they said the IRS chased them down to pay taxes. Will I most likely have to file taxes? What amount of money do you have to make to be required to file taxes? I filed out a W-4 and I either think I had 1 or zero exemptions.
Also, can someone explain what a W-4 is? I filed it out when I went to my orientation but I don't know what it does. What is the process of filing taxes? I literally have no idea about taxes, except from when my parents do theirs. Sorry for my ignorance

 | I work in a department store. I have been with the company for 4 years. I have been happy 3 out of those 4 years. A year ago, a bully manager was put at the helm of our team. She is a classic workplace bully. She is unapproachable, reprimands staff in front of coworkers and customers, she uses personal information acquired through employee files, and via other staff members against her staff. She is a pathological liar who literally invents stories to cover her frequent, and large mistakes. She has also surrounded herself with other coworkers who thrive in this kind of environment because of her presence. One in particular has continually sexually, physically and mentally harassed his coworkers unchecked for years, and uses his status as top performer to cover his indiscretions. He uses fear and intimidation to achieve success for him, and frequently states that he can do what he wants because he is a top seller. (Continued in a moment)
Out of a team of 20. 5 out 20 employees are indifferent to the abuses of other team members and support, or turn a blind eye to this managers treatment of others. 8 are continual targets of her (and his) bullying. The rest seem unaffected. There are also 5 managers out of a team of 12 who have also been vocal about their concerns, though nobody is certain what they would be willing to do to address the problem.
Several employees have contacted personal lawyers and had letters drawn in their name to discontinue continual harassment by the offenders. I cannot afford this, and do not have a lawyer to help me out. What are my options? Should I write a letter to the president of the company, of hr, our general manager and hr manager? I would be scared to sign my name to it if I did. Can anyone help me with my next move. I am not in position to quit at the moment, and I don’t want this to continue to happen to my other coworkers and anyone else that gains employment there. Please, if you can offer me any suggestions, I would be grateful. I have had to start treatment with a therapist, as well as anti anxiety medication to cope with the stress this job is causing.
OMG Your guy's responses mean so much to me, you have no idea. I am almost in tears. This is what seems to make Yahoo Answers such a great place. Even having my feelings validated by someone outside of this horrible situation has given me some relief. As to you greatly appreciated inquiry into how i ended up in retail...let's just say i made some bad choices, and had some pretty intense struggles with personal demons. Life is better than it was, but it isn't anywhere near where I want it to be. I am filled with fear to make a move and do anything else.

 | I just started a part-time job at a local department store about 3 weeks ago. My husband just got offered a better job opportunity that would mean relocating and so I would have to quit my job. I'm not sure how to go about doing it. I feel awful leaving after a few weeks, when I intended on staying there quite a while. What is the protocal? Should I still give 2 weeks notice while I'm in the probationary period?

 | I just got a job at Gordmans department store and I currently work at a grocery store and the job at Gordmans is seasonal but they said they usually keep them on the job. I am only 16 and my dad says I shouldn't quit the grocery store but I have had all the managers hit on me and harass me. And id much rather work with clothes. So should I listen to my dad and keep putting up with the harass ment or should I just put my 2 weeks notice in tomorrow?

 | I got hired by dominicks for night stocker 12am to 6am. I called the store manager and told them that I could not work the hours that they wanted and that I was quitting. I didn't even start yet and I quit the job. Will this go in the system for dominicks as no chance of rehire by any dominicks?

 | I am planning on becoming a Store Manager for either Best Buy or Home Depot. I like the pay and everything and maybe one day go to corporate. Right now I work for Shane's Rib Shack as an Assistant Manger and I am getting my Bachelors Degree in Business Administration I should be done with my degree in 2015. Do you think working for a rib shack be credible enough to become a store manager one day?? What is the fastest way in becoming a store manager? I am really interested in becoming a store manager. Any opinions on how to become one???
