...at the grocery store? I got a grocery store cashier job. Should I ask people if they've found everything ok? Isn't that an invitation for criticism?

I am a cashier at a grocery store. The check out coach called a bunch of cashiers over and yelled at us for doing a poor job on a daily front end report. The check out coach called me out and yelled at me and only me in front of the group for a mistake i made last week. Couple of the cashiers quit on the spot and some walked out because of the way they were being treated. Another cashier broke out into tears because the check out coach threatened to suspend her. We are required to greet customers, ask them questions about bags, tag anything thats not going into a bag and also require to bag for every customer. It makes me mad that the ones with power treat the rest of us like we are scum. I went and reported the unfair treatment of the cashiers, but the manager is friends with the check out coach as well as the big boss of the store. I am the only one brave enough to speak out. I am not afraid of losing my job but i worry more about the old lady cashiers who need the job to pay rent and feed their families. Is their any legal actions i can take? It doesnt help that the check out coaches, manager, and the boss of the store are friends. There is ridiculous favoritism with them and i am sick of being abused. Any advice is appreciated.

I know that most department stores and grocery stores conduct a criminal background check for anyone applying for a cashier position, but just wondering how many years back they go to see if you have anything more than minor traffic tickets.

When you give the cashier a few coupons at the supermarket, they have to look at each one carefully before scanning it. What exactly are they checking for? Shouldn't it be automatic where they just scan it and see if it goes through? Are they seeing if it's expired? Why does it take so long? Someone who has worked at a grocery store please answer. Thanks.

I started my job as a cashier 2 weeks ago and I received training. The manager told me that I keep running short on money and I'm not sure how. I make sure I give the correct change. If I keep getting short I might up getting fired or switched to another department. Please help! The manager isn't aware of my learning disability. I work at A&P and there are no express lanes.

Like self-check out in grocery stores. Hardly no need for cashiers, and then you have things like Nooks and Kindles, no need for bookstores, and online buying. This is causing thousands of stores to close around the world. What gives?

I'm a very personable person, part of my job requires me to have a lot of direct contact with people, face to face, and I'm by no means any type of expert when it comes to making eye contact though in most cases, Its something I don't really have trouble with... A couple weeks ago, I started to notice that in most cases , people I'm speaking with have trouble making eye contact with me. Perfect example of this, I'm at the grocery store, the woman checking everyone out ( Cashier ) interacted with several people before me... Making great eye contact with all of them, then when it was my turn, she was acting strange, not making any eye contact. When I notice someone doing this it throws me off.... After this incident I went out to lunch, notice the man serving me at the restaurant had trouble making eye contact with me as well... Not that these people don't look at me, but it's a nervous type of eye contact, darting eyes, raised eye brows... Are people in general nervous about looking at other people? I don't stare at people to the point of making them uncomfortable, but I've always thought it was rude to not look at someone when your speaking to them... Why do people have trouble connecting with me?

Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration states you have to be 18, but multiple people have referred to this mystical "federal law" that indicates you have to be 21. I know age 21 is required for bar tending, but cashiers at grocery stores are not selling them "by the drink". They are sealed containers! Also What about the supervision of ABC Managers?

When I am standing in line at a store waiting for check out, I have heard people be so rude to the checker and treat them with very little respect. I don't understand this behavior. I see customers look down their noses at clerks and boss them around like slaves ! I have even been in the clerks position many years ago & received this treatment. Why do some people feel this is okay ?
