I am interested in applying to Cognitive and Neurocognitive doctoral programs for the fall 2013 year. I just graduated with my MA in Psychology (it was my undergrad--I did a BA/MA) and was wondering if there were any types of job opportunities I hadn't considered that would enhance my resume/CV. So far, I have been thinking about teaching assistant positions, adjunct positions after I get some more teaching experience, lab manager positions, and research assistant positions. Is there anything I'm not thinking about that I should? I have a MA in General/Experimental Psychology. I'm interested in going the cognitive/neurocognitive/experimental route in my career... so I didn't get a CASAC license. Thanks for your reply! :)

"Willing or not, Mashke and 40,000 other at-home providers are members of a labor partnership that represents people across Michigan who watch children from low-income families. Two unions receive 1.15 percent of the state subsidies granted to those providers, or more than $1 million a year. Mashke has given up about $100 this year, and while she says it's not a huge amount of money, she's among a small group of home-based providers suing in federal court to break free from organized labor. "It's the principle. It's my constitutional rights," she said. The plaintiffs claim they were driven into the union and forced to support it financially even though they work at home, are hired by families and are not state employees. In some cases, they are even related to the children in their care. In 2006, the UAW and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME, were formally approved as partners in a union called Child Care Providers Together Michigan. Only 15 percent of the providers cast ballots, but 92 percent were in favor. The lawsuit, filed by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, claims that Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat, and her administration cleared the way for the union in exchange for valuable political support from the UAW and AFSCME. Michigan is one of at least 16 states where unions are mandatory representatives of personal-care workers, according to National Right to Work. The state and the unions have defended the arrangement as the legal result of a process that was blessed by the Michigan Employment Relations Commission. They say there is no role for a federal judge to second-guess what has occurred." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100912/ap_on_bi_ge/us_child_care_union Would you hire a scab if they strike to care for your children?

My husband was terminated from a large corporation where he originally started as a lathe specialist 3 years ago and then was transferred to another plant as a molding specialist. He worked at the new plant for 2 months and was terminated for making 1 mistake pouring an engine block. He was completely distraught and caught off guard because he's the main provider and this was a high paying job. He was never warned...written up...etc.. and only received 2 days of training for a completely different job. He filed for UE and was denied for misconduct stating that he had been warned if he short poured an engine block he would be terminated. We hired a legal representative and appealed. His hearing was yesterday and we are so worried that it will not go through. He was supplemental but still had an employer handbook with behavior or "misconduct" policies. We provided a copy of this as evidence along with his previous evaluations from his last position which were all almost perfect. We requested his employee file immediately and there was no documentation of any disciplinary actions or verbal warnings in his file. There was obviously a personal reason why his supervisor terminated him. At the telephone hearing, the corporation had a man from labor relations represent them (which is the same man that was supposed to be helping my husband get his job back) and no witnesses appeared. This man testified on hearsay that this supervisor had 4 separate verbal warnings on specific dates to my husband about short pouring. Now this obviously didn't happen and they did not provide any documentation or direct testimony to support this..but we are concerned because this could make it seem like he was warned and knew the consequences. Then at the end of the hearing...the man said that since my husband was supplemental that he could be terminated for any reason...that their contract employees and supplemental employees don't need a reason for termination. Why would he state this if they provided specific reasoning to the UE department on his termination? Just because he's an at-will employee...if he does not commit misconduct he's still entitled to UE.. or maybe I'm reading the law wrong for IL. The legal rep seems to think everything will turn out ok but I'm still hesitant. Anyone been in this situation or have any input on our chances of winning?

I posted this just a second ago but I think I put it under the wrong catagory.
