For instance, if you were applying for an editorial assistant job (where you proof read, assess unsolicited manuscripts, as well as admin tasks) what skills have you learnt from working in a book store (that does not include doing the tasks above) and how do you apply them to this area of work?

What's the best way to get an editorial assistant job for a magazine or newspaper? I'm a staff reporter for a major newspaper, so many would see this as a step down, and I'd probably would have to take a paycut. But I already know all the ins and outs of journalism, so I would be highly-qualified to assist the editors and writers with their needs. I want to go from the crazy 24-hour cycle of sports journalism to a 9-to-5 with weekends off. What's the best way to pursue such an opportunity?

I wish to know the usual salary for an entry-level editorial assistant position (mostly in the acquisitions/copy editing departments) at one of the big publishing companies in India, such as Penguin Books India, HarperCollins Publishers India, or Random House India. When I say 'entry-level', I mean for a fresher just starting out on the job.

I'm looking for an entry-level position in a publishing house (i.e. editorial assistant job). Internet search at such websites as mediabistro and bookjobs.com has not been too effective. I must have sent my resume to 15 different places and never got any reply. I don't have connections in publishing. Is there any agency that could provide good help?

I just graduated college in Decemeber with a BA in English Adolescence Education. Teaching jobs are scarce, and I am looking around at other jobs. I'd like to be an administrative assistant or an editorial assistant, but have not yet been hired for any of these positions. I am looking at a job as a secretary/typist making $24k a year... I am feeling like a loser. How much did you make right after graduating college? What was your major? And how has your salary/career changed since then?

Hello all! I'm living in NYC and I'm trying to become an editorial assistant. I'm an English major from UM-Ann Arbor and was the top of my class. I called yesterday at this publishing company and found out they are doing interviews, and now I want to call tomorrow or Friday to see if they could further look over my resume. In a sense asking for an interview. I'm puzzled. If I wait till Friday someone else may have called, but if I call tomorrow it may seem pushy. What do you guys think? Thanks!

I have recently completed my Masters in Literature and History. I have two undergrad degrees, one in English the other in Print Journalism. I want to get into a job as an Editorial Assistant but it seems nearly impossible with my limited experience. Does anyone know of companies that are willing to take a chance on graduates?

I want to apply for an editorial assistant position at a vanity press. If I were to get the job, would other publishers look down on that experience (if I then went on to apply for another job) as some people think it isn't "real" publishing? Thank you

I want to be a magazine writer/editor some day. I see in movies of people working towards their goal by being an Editor's Assistant first (the Proposal and Devil Wears Prada, for example). Do editorial assistants eventually get the opportunity to become a writer or editor? Will being an assistant benefit the resume for later application to a new magazine or publisher? Thanks.
