I have been an NCTJ qualified journalist for over a year now but have had little luck on the job front. Media Agencies, The Guardian newspaper and publishing house websites have had a few jobs on them but competition is very tough and despite a fairly impressive CV I have had no success. Unfortunately I can't afford to undertake unpaid work experience. It seems most of these editorial jobs are given through contacts or via word of mouth. Any suggestions?

For instance, if you were applying for an editorial assistant job (where you proof read, assess unsolicited manuscripts, as well as admin tasks) what skills have you learnt from working in a book store (that does not include doing the tasks above) and how do you apply them to this area of work?

I have just graduated and need a sort of filler job until I find a job that is something I want to do- journalism, editorial. The temping jobs are for big creative media companies in London, easy stuff like admin, reception etc. OR would you take a retail job to get a steady income. Retail would be regular money but I feel like once you finish uni its time to get out of the whole retail thing?

What's the best way to get an editorial assistant job for a magazine or newspaper? I'm a staff reporter for a major newspaper, so many would see this as a step down, and I'd probably would have to take a paycut. But I already know all the ins and outs of journalism, so I would be highly-qualified to assist the editors and writers with their needs. I want to go from the crazy 24-hour cycle of sports journalism to a 9-to-5 with weekends off. What's the best way to pursue such an opportunity?

I was wondering if most large companies likeBaby/Kids Gap, Babies r us, etc etc go through agencies to hire their photographers? I am wanting to do a lot of editorial and commercial work, I specialize in children's photography. I have a lot of people who tell me my work is more commerical/editorial than portrait. How would I go about getting my work noticed by these companies that cater to children. Thanks

I'm looking for an entry-level position in a publishing house (i.e. editorial assistant job). Internet search at such websites as mediabistro and bookjobs.com has not been too effective. I must have sent my resume to 15 different places and never got any reply. I don't have connections in publishing. Is there any agency that could provide good help?
