What is the difference between an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor?

What are the duties of an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor? What is the main difference between these three titles. Thank you. Woops, I meant to put a question mark, not a period. Fingers slipped.

They are simply ranks within the system. An assistant prof is a newbie professor who often does not have tenure but is working on it.
