Catering Manager Job Questions & Answers

Sort by:
I have worked for restaurants as a waiter for three years and ran my own business for five years as a sole trader. I want to change direction (relatively) into a Catering Manager role that would be applicable for institutions like hospitals, schools, hotels etc. More specifically a supervisory position that would be more 'behind the scenes' orientated as opposed to being the cook and or cashier. Side note nothing against cooks or cashiers (i have worked under both job titles in restaurants), i am trying to make what i am trying to say as specific as possible. What kind of qualification would be best suited to add this theory side to my existing experience to transition into this role? Many Thanks. I understand that i may not have conveyed my intent correctly when saying 'what kind of qualification would be best suited' I mean to say what qualification should be pursued to best complement the experience i have in order to apply for the types of positions i specified in the original question. Many thanks, again.

Specifically, this is a catering/sales manager position at a Westin hotel in the Chicago burbs. Full time job selling meeting space, food, and beverages to corporations mostly (its a big business hotel, not much family vacation business here) Just wondering if anyone has a clue about what kind of salary to expect?

Apparently "it's a job that pays me money" isn't good enough for employers. I was a fairly successful retail and catering manager for many years, I can't get jobs in management for complicated reasons not of my making and people want me to have some fantastic reason to want to stack shelves. What BS will get me a job cos I have no idea what they're looking for and I've apparently lost that essential management skill of bullshitting.

Would have most likely start as a front desk agent or what would be most likely? I shouldn't say NO experience, I worked at a hotel for 6 months a couple years ago but it closed and I lost my job. I really liked the field and that's why I'm thinking about pursing a degree in hospitality.

1 job for only two weeks as a server, very minor work behind their small bar, Real estate liscence, 10 months of practicing making drinks at bartending school, about 15 college courses, about 4 years of working at retail stores, telemarketing, and restaurants. 6 years as a live in house keeper and counselor at a group home, 2 years as a housekeeper with my own small company that I started. Bartender for a wedding and two private parties for St. Patricks day and a birthday? Which items would be better off left off the application, and which ones would help? Or would any of them help at all ? Would any combination of these be enough to get a job as a server or bartender anywhere? Am I fooling myself in thinking I could be a bartender / server with this? What kind of job should I do? For a place like tgi fridays or applebees?

I've been working in the food service industry since I was 18, from dishwaser all the way to general manager, and now I feel like its time to get out. I have a business degree, but feel like I've never used it to my advantage. I'm looking to move in to the "corporate world, " but have no idea what positions my skills (people management, customer service, multitasking, etc.) would be useful for.

I know times are hard with business and companies need to expand their products or even locations. This is not the case. I work for a company that is suppose to sell, industrial supplies for manufacturing companies. I am the office manager and my job is suppose to be, take customer orders, invoices, shipping, receiving, payroll answer phones accounts payable and receivable, create, design and manage website and other misc things. I have worked here for 8 years. Now within the last 2 years, My boss started a dance studio, that I create marketing material for, run the website answer the phones it has now expanded into Zumba lessons and tumbling which I manage also. In the last 4 months he started renting out space in the warehouse to solar companies and Satellite tv companies. That's fine, but now I load and unload their trucks, move things around in the warehouse on top of all my other work. Newest job I have now is washing dishes for the catering company he is doing. I am washing plates, cups glasses to get these price tags off. Now he wants me to decorate the room and sew curtains. I have told him I have too much too do, and I can't do this anymore. He laughs and blows it off. Enough is enough, I don't want to loose my job but I don't want to do this anymore. Please some advice.
