Clinical Research Assistant Job Questions & Answers

What can I do with a BS degree in Psychology with little experience? Preferably in mental health, not that marketing/customer service stuff. I'm aware that my options are limited, but where do people like me even start? All of the mental health positions I've looked at so far want at least 1-3 years of experience. I can't just become a youth counselor, case manager, or psychiatric technician overnight. It's hard to get a research assistant job at a university. So far, I've spent 3 months volunteering at a psychiatric hospital and work shadowing under a Clinical Psychologist. I currently have a part-time job assisting people with developmental disabilities in personal care (ex: changing diapers). But you only need a high school diploma to do that. I really want to do something in mental health or social work at the BS degree level. By the way, I'm going to graduate school for a Masters degree in Social Work this Fall, so I also want something that can help prepare me for my internships. My long-term career goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Most people in my program have at least 2-3 years of experience in social work already. This program expects you to start your internship right away. How do I begin to build up counseling/therapy skills? Any suggestions? I live Raleigh, NC. Thanks, I really really appreciate it... @monique: I will be a full-time student, so I'd like to work part-time during college. I get the sense that a lot of people are able to do this (more like they have to). I'll spend at least 20 hrs a week doing internships for two years. It seems that most other programs teach you foundation in social work before starting your internships, but here you begin internships immediately in the first semester. I obviously want this, but I'm looking to prepare myself a little more in the next 4 months, both financially and experience-wise... Until college begins in the fall, I can work full-time. My mornings and evenings are wide open. I'm having a hard time finding those entry-level jobs in mental health, though... Psychiatric technicians only need a HS diploma, but I fall completely short of the 1-year experience requirement. I'd go for that if I could.

Hi all, So I'm feeling a bit discouraged. I've applied to 68 jobs thus far (beginning 2/1/13), mostly in the clinical research assistant/coordinator realm; I've also applied to a couple ambulatory services representative jobs and a couple non-profit jobs. So far, I've only heard back from one company (to say that I was not being asked for an interview). I'm graduating in May with a degree in Political Science, though I did spend some time at another university and I have extensive experience in the medical field (both via volunteering and internships). I have excellent grades (3.98 GPA at the major university I was at for about a year and a half) and a 3.6 GPA at my current university. I'm applying for jobs at all of my area's major research hospitals, which I'm sure has a little bit to do with why I haven't heard much yet -- I started applying in earnest within the past week or two. Given that I'm waiting to hear from major academic teaching hospitals, could I be waiting longer than average to see if my resume has been accepted for review/I'll get an interview? My ultimate goal is to pursue my Master's degree in Healthcare Administration (I was supposed to go to grad school this year for speech therapy, but I ended up needing major ankle surgery in November and thus will not be ready to move away from my surgeons/doctors or be on my feet virtually 24/7). I'm just getting nervous because, despite being qualified for a great deal of these jobs, I haven't heard anything back yet. How long does it usually take? This is my first "real" job outside of internships, so I'm not really sure what to expect. Also, I put my base salary requirement at 30k -- I've done some research on average salaries for the jobs I've applied to in my area, and the average salary is 32-34k. Should I try lowering my salary? Though, I'll admit, anything lower than 30k would be tough to live on where I am. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!! Sorry, I should have made that clearer when stating about my GPA. Some of the applications actually require a particular GPA, writing sample, etc. But on the whole, yes, I'm aware that GPA doesn't really matter all that much and it is what I do for the company that counts.

I am graduating in May with a bachelors in psychology. I am taking a year off before entering the field of either clinical or counseling psychology. Can I find a job being a research assistant? Where/how? My university is not big into research. Are there any summer opportunities available if I cannot do a year long program?

I am majoring in Biology and Economics and have a GPA around 3.3-3.4 I didn't do too hot freshman year but progressively have gotten better and better up to this point in my Junior year where I'm now averaging a 3.6 or so GPA. Also I've working 2 research assistant jobs, having previously worked 1 other research assistant job and I plan to volunteer and shadow in a hospital this year. Considering my improvement since freshman year and my two majors, do I still have a shot at getting into med school? THANK YOU

I currently work as a HR Assistant in a clinical research organization and I recently received an increase of about 4?or my last year performance which overall was good! A receptionist who has about the same amount of experience as I do with no degree not only received a 4?ncrease but was also promoted to an HR Assistant role with an additional 4?ncrease, now making almost $3000 more then me. This has made me furious!! How can I approach my Director for a fair evaluation?? Or help her see my side without any threats. I currently need my job as I am planning on making some life changes.

I am looking into the career path of a CRA. What does a CRA do all day? What are the career options, say, in 5 years time? What are the standard qualifications for a CRA starting out and in the higher levels? What type of pay can be expected? How does one move upward into management/upper management after being a CRA for some years? Is the job rewarding or overly-stressful? Where are most CRAs employed in the USA? Is it more favorable to work directly for a pharma or biotech or at CRO?
