I have a biology degree and I have worked in various labs doing research. I would like to move into the direction of clinical research monitoring sites and all that goes along with that job. The only problem is every open job posting wants you to have at least one years experience. How do I get experience?

I'm graduating in May with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, and I'm looking into jobs as a Clinical Research Coordinator/Associate. How soon before graduation should I start applying for jobs? I do eventually plan on going back to school for my Master's degree, probably in public health; I will most likely complete that online and continue to work, however. Alternatively, I may get a Clinical Trials certificate from BU Medical School -- I'll see what ends up working the best with my future career/employer. My schedule for my last semester of college is actually really easy -- I'll have Wednesday and Friday off, so I could theoretically work part-time for one of these companies I hope to apply to until I receive my degree in May. I was thinking of starting to apply in March -- is that too late? Too early? Advice is welcome! :) Thanks!

Hi I am working in the pharmaceutical business in the UK and wish to move into a role as a clinical research associate (CRA). I've been told I need to speak to someone in the job and wonder has anyone got any ideas how to go about finding someone who could help out? Short of cold calling someone, who probably would not want to jeopardise company confidentiality, not sure what the best approach is. Many thanks TJ

I'll be graduating college in May, and I'm wondering if it would be more beneficial for me to buy a house instead of renting an apartment or (even worse) moving back in with my parents. First, a little background: I'm graduating with a BA degree in Political Science (though I also attended another college for health-related professions and I do have experience in the medical field). I was originally planning on going to graduate school for speech-language pathology, but I just had major ankle surgery last week and thus will not be healed in time to begin classes in the summer. I do, however, plan to return to school with a slight change in focus -- probably public health or an MBA, depending on the job I ultimately get. As of right now, I plan to apply to jobs as a clinical research coordinator/associate. Assuming I get the job that I want, I'll be making $45-50,000/year. I'd be working in a major city (about an hour away from my current home) and thus I will need to move closer for work. I've considered apartments, condos, and houses. First, let me tell you that I am not the typical college student in that I am very fortunate to have a trust fund. Should I use this money to put a down payment on a house? I'm excellent at budgeting my money and I don't intend to buy myself some extravagant $3 million dollar mansion. Rather, I'm setting my budget around $250-300k, which I believe is reasonable. I will also be moving in with my boyfriend (and soon-to-be fiancee) -- and trust me, we've talked about this a LOT. We know we're young, but we are getting married eventually; we've known each other since we were 11 years old and we've been dating for about 2 years now, so we're not rushing into anything. So, he'll also have a job that will land him a similar salary ($45-50k/year) to start. So, would it be better to get an apartment, condo, or house? We need to live close to a city and we would most likely commute in via the subway, but we would like to keep our cars for emergency purposes. Obviously, I'll also meet with a financial advisor about this too because I realize it's a major decision, but I just wanted to get some initial ideas. Thanks!! :) Also, I should add that apartment rentals near where we would like to work are approximately $2200/month, which is more expensive than a mortgage payment would be on a 4bed/2bath house slightly outside the city.

How much does an entry-level clinical research associate earn in asia (Singapore, Philippines, or Australia)? Most of the job ads just state salaries as 'negotiable'. Would the pay go up if you have a med degree?

I am interested in hearing the opinions from folks who are on the field or know someone who is in the field? Are the jobs usually short contract jobs that ends with the studies? Do you have to be on the job hunt constantly? If you have a BSc and a CRA training certificate do you need any further education in order to move up?

I am currently a nurse working in a hospital, but would like to get out of the hospital setting. It just seems like all of the jobs want you to have experience. So, how can I get it? I also don't have a Bachelors Degree yet and the majority of jobs want that as well. Any ideas?

I am looking into the career path of a CRA. What does a CRA do all day? What are the career options, say, in 5 years time? What are the standard qualifications for a CRA starting out and in the higher levels? What type of pay can be expected? How does one move upward into management/upper management after being a CRA for some years? Is the job rewarding or overly-stressful? Where are most CRAs employed in the USA? Is it more favorable to work directly for a pharma or biotech or at CRO?
