I am currently a 2nd semester nursing student and have been undergoing several different clinical rotation experiences. I've recently got to work on an oncology floor and now I am doing med-surg. I realized that I'm not bedside nurse material. Is there any other nursing fields I can go into that doesn't require being a bedside nurse? And for those nurses who think real nurses are only "bedside nurses" please do not write judgemental responses...I just need some advice to what other types of jobs are out there for nursing beside bedside nursing (i.e. Public Health Nurse, Nurse Practitioner). Oh, another question, if anyone is a nurse practitioner, please give me your input because I am quite initerested...any advice would help. Oh, hint...I do want to continue my education (but I don't want to be a teacher)

I am applying for a graduate assistantship and I want some feedback on it. The directions say that the essay is not to exceed 500 words (to include your personal and professional goals and how you seek to contribute to your chosen field and why you feel you are deserving of this opportunity). Here is my essay: In December 2010, my grandmother was admitted to the hospital because she had a heart attach which led me to reevaluate what I wanted to do with my life. As I observed the emotional support and medical care that was provided by the nurses, I was impressed by their integral role in patient recovery. This experience made me realize that I wanted to become a nurse so that I can help people help same way the nurses helped my grandmother which is why I enrolled in the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) program at the University of Texax (UT) beginning fall 2012. My short-term goal is to become a registered nurse (RN). I want to work as a RN so that I can provide direct patient care, and educate patients and their families how to manage their illnesses or injuries. The skills that I learn as a RN will help me achieve my long-term goal. My long-term ambition is to work as an infection control practitioner because I want to isolate the sources of infection, provide education and recommendations to control the spread of the infection, and develop strategies to prevent outbreaks. Obtaining a graduate assistantship at UT is a promising opportunity for me to gain practical experience in teaching, research and academic service. This opportunity would help improve and enhance my abilities to have a successful career as a nurse because I would gain valuable nursing and research knowledge, as well as leadership and communication skills. The communication skills I hope to gain include speaking and listening skills. An assistantship would provide me with the chance to work with respected nursing and research scholars at UT. My time working as an epidemiologist has provided me with many skills that will enhance my participation in an assistantship in the nursing and research fields. As an epidemiologist I gained excellent researching and writing skills by analyzing infectious disease data and writing reports. In addition, I designed, implemented, and evaluated investigative procedures. I wrote and administrated surveys, and conducted interviews and focus groups. I am fully committed to constantly improving my performance at work and I ensure that any work that is delegated to me is completed to the satisfaction of my superiors. I believe that I possess the qualifications and academic potential to be an excellent graduate assistant. I am well versed in research design, implantation and evaluation; literature reviews, survey design and administration, database management, data analysis and report writing. My time management skills are excellent and I always meet deadlines, and with my attention to detail, I know my work is correct. I want to work as a graduate assistant because I believe it would help improve and enhance my abilities to have a successful career in the healthcare and research fields. Finally, an assistantship would give me the opportunity to work with professors in the nursing and research fields. I am confident of the fact that if selected for an assistantship I will work with dedication and commitment.

So, here's the story. I work in a high volume work place and we do wear ear plugs. Anyways about three weeks ago my left ear started to pain. Went to bed and woke up and I couldn't hear a thing so I went to the doctor and she said nothing was wrong with me. So I go back home and the next thing I know it moves over into my right ear. The only word I can use for the pain is seriously gnarly. The gland under my ear is swollen, I can't touch my ear and I do know I have an ear infection because the doctor said so.I went to four different doctors. They gave me stronger meds and I'm not allowed to put Olive Oil in my ear or cotton swabs. I can't lay my on ear, and I can't sleep because of the pain. I tried placing a heating pad on it but it hurts to much. The question is, do anyone know any ways for me to get some relief from the pain? Even for a short amount of time.My jaw hurts to but I doubt it's Temporomandibular Disorder. Help, please?! note: I am taking tylenol and they only work for a certain amount of time.

Alright I have an older gelding. He's the first horse I've owned, although I worked at a ranch for years. Soon, I was expecting the eventual embarrassing sheath cleaning. However, I wasn't expecting it so soon. My hinsband is between construction jobs tight now, so money is tight, though I'd prefer for the vet to do it, ill have to. He doesn't like the hose, so currently I've just rubbed him down with baby oil and ill rub it out tomorrow. However, I'm not an expert, and I'm pretty sure I've gotten a part of a bean out, and I've never encountered one before. (Finally to the question) I can't afford a traq and nothing I've found makes him drop the you know. I've tried scratchies in favorite spots and tries to gentle tug it down. Tried feeding massaging and grooming but he just sucks it up more. I really need to get him to drop because I can't tell if there is anything else there so ill need to see. Before I get he is also swollen in that area and very touchy in his hindquarters, so it takes a bit of time to get to that stage too...can't rub on his legs.

Yesterday i kept pooping all day long. i pooped like 12 times in less than 16 hours. Every hour i found myself visiting the toilet and it made me go crazy. I could not do anything else at all because my stomach was in such poor shape. Soon i became dehydrated and nauseous. I totally lost control of my bowels. And i could not even sleep, because even in sleep i had to wake up every hour to poop. It was like my intestines had become poop generating factory. i was almost blacking out and i went to er. at er they put me on IV saying i'm dehydrated. Even in ER i pooped twice. The doctor then said, "well its a good thing that you are emptying your bowels. eventually all the stool will clear out and then you'll have a clean system" And after that i get discharged. As i reached home i immediately had explosive diarrhea. Now i fear eating food and only take liquid foods. i will have to take gastroenterologist appointment and that is 3 weeks away. On internet i found such symptoms could be colitis, crohns or various intestinal disorders. But the er did NOTHING and just send me home. Why? Is it fair that i should pay a massive amount for such ER visit where basically nothing was done except for hydrating me?

Last weekend I had a urinary tract infection so I went to the quick clinic at my local grocery store and saw the nurse practitioner that works there. She did the urine test and prescribed the antibiotics to me and starting asking questions about me other than just the UTI. She asked me if I was on birth control and I said no. She asked if my husband and I used condoms and I said no. She said, "Oh, so you're trying to conceive." I said, "No, but if we got pregnant that'd be cool with us." She said, "Well, if you're not using birth control, then you ARE trying to get pregnant so you need to start taking folic acid tablets." I wanted to scream, "We use the pull out method and it has worked for us for 4 years. LEAVE ME ALONE!" Anyways, who do you think is right here? I was mad when I left her office but she doesn't know that.

I'm a college student = no insurance, no family because long story short, they are manipulative and don't support me going to college. I live on my own, work part-time job. Our college medical plan sucks, they are double Blue Cross Blue Shield. I kid you not. Four weeks ago, my problem started with redness at the sides of my eyes then flakes of skin on my eyelashes falling and just a few eyelashes fell but it stopped. My top eyelids started drying, swollen, bumpy, eyelid skin hardening + peeling, eventually became itchy, burning.. Horrible. I did hot compresses every day a few times with a heated towel, even at work with my cotton balls. Hot mess. Started trying baby shampoo with Q-tips and diluted water 2 days ago. The swollen is a bit better but my right eyelid swelled last night, and I guess I itched the other lid so much there was a speck of blood today. It's right in the area where a whole bunch of skin flaked off. I don't have allergies, not switched products or foods. I threw all my Maybelline makeup away & replaced with L'Oreal Hypoallergenic. HOWEVER, I am wondering if this started because some of my mascara tubes are close or over a year old. I called my doc's office and asked if I should see Doc or a dermatologist. The nurse told me she will ask the doc when she gets in tmw. What are your thoughts? oh and I moisturize with vaseline

I've been thinking about some different tattoos and I wanted to get opinions... I'm waiting until I'm older so I don't get anything I'll grow out of liking or regret. First idea: a heart (cliche, i know) from an autograph I got from an actress/singer that I am now really good friends with. It means a lot to me because she's practically my twin; we love all of the same things. I'd get it either on my wrist or a little under where the top of my pants are, towards one side. Second: Be the change or To do more for the world than the world does for you - that is success. Be the change on my wrist or the success one on my forearm or my side. I love both of these because they're so true. Helping others is such a big part of my life. I'll be going to college to become an EMT or nurse practitioner. Let me know what you think.(:

I have found a massage parlor that caters to men and seems to be a front for escort services. The hourly rate is only $60, much lower than going to a couples massage spa like Massage Works or Massage Envy. I looked at the website and this place I found is not a massage parlor for couples unless you are dating a stripper. The deal is that once inside the room, the girl will ask the customer, usually a man but sometimes a lesbian or bisexual woman, if the customer wants "everything." In response the customer is supposed to know that at that point they are to produce a sum of cash, usually about $150 to confirm that they indeed want everything and know what that entails. Depending upon the girl, that might mean a hand job, oral sex, and even full intercourse and anal sex, just like with a prostitute in a whore house. Part of me is curios about the place. Part of me is concerned about the health risks. I have been to massage parlors in my area but they are not escorts. About the furthest I get is that at times during the massage, I am completely naked while the female masseuse rubs me down. But after a while she covers me up again with a sheet or a towel. Sometimes I take the cover off again, but then she covers me again. So now I am about to go to a place where not only will the girl expect me to be naked, she will be actively encouraging services other than a back and shoulder rub. I thought that a hand job is a minimum risk thing. However, these girls have long, sharp fingernails and are working with dozens of men every day. What if she were to cut me with her fingernails? Could I get HIV from that? Or Hep C? I also figure that most of the girls that work there are not what you would call licensed physical therapists or nurse practitioners. They are probably working there because they need to money to feed a drug habit, most likely an intravenous drug habit. Considering that, if an HIV infected person, or a carrier cuts me, even by accident, I could get infected. Is that right? Or am I just being paranoid? If there was oral sex, should I put on a condom? Is that necessary? I have never had sex with an escort so the only time I have used condoms is for girlfriends who smoked and would not go on birth control pills. I never had oral sex from a person who I had to pay. Finally is the intercourse issue. I would imagine that these girls would know a lot more about sex than the few women I have slept with in my life. Afterall, it's their stock and trade. I have never performed anal sex on a woman. I'm not gay so I am not interested in receiving anal. And with anal sex the risks for contracting all sorts of illnesses are greater. There are other issues too. How is my girlfriend going to feel about it if she finds out? What would my friends think of me if I got infected and had to go to the hospital to be treated? One time when I went to a local strip club, a stripper gave me a hand job. So far, I have had no side effects from that. I started a new relationship with my current GF and was tested for STDs, HIV, Hep C, and HPV and all tests came back negative. Perhaps I was lucky. So I figure if I start off with just a hand job, that's pretty low risk. I did think that if the girl was really hot, she might persuade me into getting everything, including oral sex, intercourse, and anal sex. What if she gave me an STD? Or what if she passed HPV on to me, as a carrier, then I passed that on to my girlfriend and she got some sort of vaginal cancer or some sexual disease that men carry on to women from other infected women? My girlfriend is out on a girls over night out. So I have a free night to myself. What sorts of health risks are involved with having sex with what is basically a prostitute? I might say that I will just limit myself to a hand job that's low risk. But if the girl is really cute, she might talk me into riskier sexual activities so she can charge me more money. I have only had sex with four women in my life. But my ex-girlfriend admitted to me that she was raped in her 20s and went through a s****y period where she had a lot of one night stands. So I went to Mass General Hospital to the Sexual Disease Center and its one of the best clinics in the world for testing STDs. I also got immunized for Hep C over the course of several months of injections. My father died from Hep A and my aunt was sick with another strand of hepatitis that a person gets sick from but doesn't die. My dad had the fatal hepatitis. No, I do not show any outward signs of being affected like pain in urination, discharge. About all I have is my penis is sensitive to intense friction and I get this rash like symptom that no one knows what it is. I also get it from riding my bicycle. That's another question.
