Generally for any type of profession, the more education it requires then the more it pays. Vet tech takes more education than receptionist, so it would pay more. Same reason a doctor gets paid more than a nurse, etc.

The Vet Tech/Assistant requires specific technical skills and certification. A receptionist answers the phone and provides general information. Jobs that require technical skills tend to pay more money.
