Busser Job Questions & Answers

I've been a busser for two years, since I was 16 years old. Now I'm 18, and it's time to move out. I want to get a job as a waiter in Manhattan, or Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx... Any other borough as long as I make enough money to live in one of the four main urban boroughs! I've found apartments in The Bronx and Queens, and Brooklyn, even a few in Manhattan. I need to have an income, a job before I move into one of them of course. Right now I'm in South Carolina (yuck, never come here, you'll only suffer...) and I only have a few thousand dollars from being a busser. That was my only job and everybody seems to think that I'm great at it. I do my job great, I help other employees out all of the time, I'm always doing something... I'm so nervous about this. I can't stay here a day longer then my 18th birthday or I will literally die. Please, don't ask. I digress... Is it even possible at all to secure a server position in another city? How could I do it, without having to fly up there to fill out paper work and stuff? Maybe I could have the employment paperwork faxed to me, then fill it out, and fax it back? What employer would go through all of this trouble? I'd love to work at a restaurant in the city, but anywhere else in New York is fine too. Please help me I'm so worried about my future I think I'm going to become sick. BTW, being a busser is the only job I've ever been able to have here. Trust me, I'VE LOOKED! Day in and day out, every tiny little store of Georgetown, SC is either not hiring, or doesn't have any papers left for employement... I'm lucky as hell to have gotten my busser job. There's nothing else I can do. I do all that I can. Everything I do is for New York. P.S. Yes, I am asking again and I know it.

I was in between jobs. I went to a restaurant in Oklahoma to be a dishwasher. The employees told me that the owner signed an agreement with the Oklahoma Tax Commission that he does not have to put his employees on the payroll. Actually the waitresses are probably paid under the table too. My friends at other restaurants say that they have never heard of the agreement that you can sign with the Oklahoma Tax Commission. Does anybody know how a company can do this? Is this true in any other states? How do i notify the legal government in this situation. What is the phone number?

Little unhappy where I am currently working at a retail sporting goods store as a cashier. I am constantly hassled by managers for getting customers to open up store credit cards, I don't fit in socially with the other employees, and I get little hours (roughly 11 hrs per week). Was offered a job as a busser at a chain restaurant. Would be getting my desired 15-20 hours per week. Have no clue if I would fit in socially... assuming I would since I've worked at my college dining hall and made friends there. The busser job would be fri, sat, and sun nights... which would take away all of my free time and the job may be "dirty" compared to being a cashier. Any thoughts/advice and why?

Other than a server, busser, and landscaping, I can't think of places to apply to. UPS is always hiring for package handlers, but they're only 4 hour shifts. I'm also registered with a temp agency, but things are so bad right now I've not even heard anything for work from them either. Does anyone have some good ideas to where a college student could work just for the summer?

I am 18 and I have been looking for a job. I live in philadelphia and I haven't found anything I've been to two interviews and I didn't even get a call back. Most jobs don't even get back to me at all. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do or who would hire me.

Do you go off of food sales or total sales? The bussers usually get the alcohol glasses from the table but that would also mean that servers tip out on alcohol twice then, right? So if my food sales are $900 and my total sales (not gross sales) are $1100 how much should a server tip the busser out if they are supposed to get tipped out on 1.5????

While I'm not exactly a "starving student" I would like to earn some extra money. Currently I go to school 3 days a week with 4 courses each day (roughly 10:30 AM-4:30 PM). The two days off days are generally spent doing homework. Are there any 'interesting' jobs could fit into this schedule? Ideally I'd like to do something besides grading papers or manning a checkout counter. Thanks!
