Here's my dilemma. I applied for a position a while ago where I already passed the first interview and they invited me back for a second interview in late January. It was for a management development position where for 52 weeks you rotate within different parts of the company and then select a division based on what suits you. However, just yesterday, another position opened up called "Marketing Specialist" which is more in tune with my major, and sounds like it actually suits me better. I was wondering should I apply for that second position even though I'm already half way through the door with the management development position? What do you think I should do?

Do companies, both internally and externally, have any legal obligation to advertise and interview for a new post if there is clearly more than one person interested in applying? Also, are there any legal guidelines for the use of management development programmes for employees? ie can people simply join if they decide they want to, follow no particular structure and obtain a job at any point (completion is not relevant as there is no structure!) on nothing but the decision of one manager? Help much appreciated! Thansk Fengirl. Does this mean that two employees on the same management development programme (neither obviously better than the other) with one receiving obvious favouritism and subsequent promotion is legal and is in fact at the managers discretion?

I am interested in building on my expertise in non-profit management, organizational development, and strategic planning. There seem to be very few consulting firms that occupy this particular space, particularly in the categories of interim-CEO/Executive Director, non-profit company restructuring, strategic planning. However, most consulting firms that appear to be successful have far more infrastructure than I can afford to develop. I would love to get advice about how to launch a consulting firm with limited resources for the start-up.

I am a 31 yo engineer with a Master in management, 4 years of experience (2 of which at management level) but whant to change careers. I want to move into something that will take me out of the mill/factory/office and look for things in remote areas. I've been driving around the Bay Area for three days. Spent the first checking out places in downtown San Jose. Then cruised up to Palo Alto. Then circled Mountain View, passed through several other communities. Today I did the drive to the city and checkout out some lofts and different neighborhoods, trying to keep the travel time in mind. So, put simply, where do people live out here? I just wrapped up an MBA and will be starting a management development program with a med devices / pharma company. Lived in downtown Chicago near Wrigley before bschool and like the city vibe, value the ability to walk to things. I've seen Santana Row and it looks like Vegas-style prefab community. I checked out the Pines and have some reservations about that hulking complex, though I did like the upper-end units. Any insights or miracle cures would be great. Rent range is $2000-$2400 or so. Not sure how much of my previous post can be seen, but here goes.... I've been cruising around in my rental car for three days. Started by focusing on downtown San Jose, the moved on to Palo Alto, then to Mountain View, then to the SOMA area of SF. Really tough to figure this out. Looking for two bedroom, two bath, W/D in unit - and some stuff within walking distance. I'm 31 and married, no kids. I don't have any pets or a meth lab or anything like that. I drove out to Los Gatos today and thought that was pretty cool, but pretty pricey for the rental market. I'm here doing a rotational program after wrapping up my MBA. Any insights on any of this would be greatly appreciated. And if you have a place to rent....

I know all the details are dependent on the contract, but how would a typical management contract work in this example, where the small company I work for gets bought? The president of my company would want to make sure that I am well taken care of, so he would make some clause about my position... that my salary gets increased by x?or at least one year, then after that the new owner can make a decision to keep me on or let me go. Is that how it typically works?
