I work at a large retail company writing software in C and RPG using DB2 for persistence. What kind of opportunities are there for foreign programmers in Taipei? I can speak mandarin like a 4th grade student, read like a 2nd grade student and write like a preschooler. I am not bound to C and RPG, I also know python and php, and use mysql.

I am currently working as a Database Analyst and love it! I graduated in December and started my first entry-level job as a Database Analyst. Of course, I work with everything SQL. I was just curious as to how long SQL will be the main requirement for employers? I know I will have to learn whatever new comes out down the road.

I'm only 14 years old and I have decided that for a career I want to be a programmer. I was thinking maybe c# or c++. I have visual basics on my computer. I was thinking about buying the books that teach you how to learn c++ etc. But I don't know. I just want to know what I should try to learn first. Hopefully by an experienced programmer and there recommendation. Thanks! ps. I'm just confused, I wasn't aware how many languages there are!

Ok young ones. I envy you. You guys know all the new computer languages like HTML, Java, C++, etc. I'm like your old professor who is a dam good expert on Cobol and CICS and DB2 but I'll never find a job that wants those qualifications. So, I need to learn a whole lot more. What languages would you suggest I start to learn? If it were you, would you go back to community colleges or just try to learn from on line tutorials? Thanks for your honest reply. Thank you so much to those who have answered. I think after I get a little practice in HTML, I'll move on to Java and C++. It's amazing how far programming has come. I started out with punch cards on an old IBM computer. It's hard to keep up when your 6-figure job wants you to remain in the mainframe world. Thanks again. You've all been so wonderful, thank you. I almost think at my age I should apply for Director of IT departments and just direct things from behind a desk! LOL. I've learned a lot today.
