 | How well do I need to know these additional things? I know C++ better than the back of my hand, and could get every possible interview question correct. But when they ask for other languages too I couldn't. I used Java maybe 6 months ago, and C# 5 years ago, and SQL just the basics, along with other various languages. But I really wouldn't say at all that I know them. How well should I know these other languages when they ask for them? And I have had no software engineering job yet, so my resume is blank except just me working on a CS degree, and an internship as a computer tech guy. All of my experience is really just my hobbies, how can I show interviewers that I know what I am doing. And just for the info, my dad is a software engineer as well, so I have grown up being able to use him as a resource, and I feel confident in taking my skills to the work area. So I guess, what should I do? And I am honestly fine with an internship as well, I just am having a hard time finding one. I just want experience. Does anyone know of any internships maybe in C++, in the north west?

 | I am currently learning Java at University... this is the main programming language being taught there at the moment.
What I want to know is, to get a good successful programmer/software engineer job... should I learn any other language(s)?
If so... what language(s) should I mainly focus on?
Not interested in LAMP (web design side) at the moment!).
Thinking of the Microsoft side... but there are so many to choose from!
Thanks!
Is C++ better than C sharp?
Don't need tutorials for Java... already learning that in Uni now!

 | I am 18, and planning to go into computer science next year as my major. I have always had a fascination with computers, programming and concepts associated with it, and algorithms. I think that choosing either software engineering or computer science would be the correct choice for me. But I was wondering what is the usual day like for these jobs. I looked stuff up online, but it is not always like what a person really does in the field.
And a side question, how many programming languages do you have to know (based on your experience) when working for a company? And, what would you recommend for someone like me who plans to go into the field of computer science/programming?

 | I am wanting to develop a software engineering skill set, possibly to use in future work as a software engineer. I have some questions about getting into this field.
1.) Where would I go for mentoring in this field? Is there somewhere in the open source community that can let me acquire the experience I need to possibly get a job in software engineering in the future?
2.) Is a consulting career (doing this for clients for hire) viable in the future, once experience is gained?
3.) Since I come from an engineering (including electrical and computer) background, would embedded software engineering be a good fit for myself, or should I just stick to non-embedded programming?
4.) What languages would be a good fit for a.) embedded b.) application and c.) web?
5.) I've heard of a formal software development process/lifecycle? Is this what software engineering covers, and is there an Internet tutorial on this?
6.) Any other tips?
Thanks!

 | I have really good skills in C++, and okay skills in the Windows API. I also know Java, PHP, Python, bits of other random languages, HTML/CSS, etc. But my main language is C++. Is there a program that is reasonable, that would impress any employer. I am wanting to make a program that covers all of the bases that most employers are looking for when hiring a software engineer.

 | I am software engineer having 3 years of experience in India. I am planning to goto Canada or U.K. to search for job as going to U.S. is difficult due to Visa processing. Currently I am working in Java Web Services but i don't know why I am not liking this technology. Should I shift my technology to something else like Android? I like to make new applications so I may like creating mobile applications. I am planning to take off for 2 months to learn any new technology so i might be good in any technology in 2 months and can show experience in same technology in my resume.
Please suggest should I switch my technology? Which consultancy to go? Any other suggestions are welcome.

 | I started college late, 21, but I am working my way up, trying to get through my classes fast.
Was wondering what does it take to be a Software Engineer.
I am undecided still and trying to get some answers on some majors.
I do like computers, even though in high school I was the economics guy.
I am a bit familiar with coding (Game Maker, and Java) and a quick leaner of codes.
Also how hard will it be to find a job(jobs in NJ or PA) once I finish, if I choose this major
