What is the difference between an Analyst and a Programmer?

I have always wanted to be an analyst. Currently I am a Database Programmer in the hospital. I create VBA programs but also write SAS and SQL to extract data and check data quality.I basically create programs for Research Coordinator and Research Assistants to use. I have planned to switch to Decision Support Analyst position next year once I have the minimum one year experience with SAS and large data sets requirement. For four years I have been chasing the career to be an Analyst I just want to know if it is right for me. My current job is somewhat related to what Analyst does but I dislike having to troubleshoot computer problems like why the Research Coordinator cannot open email attachment or they cannot print from their computers. I also like interacting with other people and going to meetings etc, so as a programmer I am in the backend which I dislike plus I like the business and operation side of healthcare instead of the research environment I am in now. I want to be an analyst to do statistics and analyze data to make decisions. I am just wondering if that is what analyst really do or are they in the backend where they create programs for people?
