Software Development Job Questions & Answers

I am a software developer with 5 years experience working with Microsoft technologies (.net, sql server). I'd like to find more interesting work than creating web sites and desktop applications. I've checked some of the government job websites, but none list software development jobs. Surely the government has in-house software development?

I will be looking for a software development job when I graduate in May next year, and in this economy I am trying to cast a wide net. As such, I was wondering if anybody on the web has compiled a list of companies (especially tech companies) which traditionally hire the most new grad developers? Some "famous" places come to mind such as Microsoft and EA Games, but apart from these?

So, I am a Quality Assurance Analyst with almost 13 years experience. I am bored with Quality Assurance. I can do it with my eyes closed. My question is this: What is the fastest way to get a job doing software development? I have self studied Java and C#. I also have half a masters degree in Computer Science. My undergrad degree is in something other than computers. Do I go for certificates? Do hiring managers look at those?

I know that computer engineers tend to focus on the hardware aspects of computers, but could an engineering major specialize in software and land a job in software development? Also, are there any kinds of computing jobs where software and hardware sort of meet? I'm trying to decide on whether or not I should major in Computer Science or Computer engineering. Both hardware and software really interest me, but it seems like I'm going to have to decide between one or the other.

Hi, I have a degree in computer science and software development from a leading university. But still when I apply for jobs or go for interviews they ask for work experience.i tried to get into graduate programe but since my marks are not that great I cant get into such ones either. So will it be a help if I do certification courses such as CCNA and learn things like PHP on my own and develop some websites. I would also like to mention here that the reason why my marks are low is when I started the degree I had no basic knowledge in IT and therefor with minimum help with my friends I tried really hard.Because of this experience I am now really motivated to do programming than ever before.
