I'm 1+ year experienced web developer, eu citizen. One week ago I decided to create my portfolio, which will contain projects, that will be made by me and I'll participate in. Moreover, I'm going to write tutorials and tricks on web development here. In the near future I would like to find a web dveloper job in UK. So, if there are some developers, who can tell me what really do I need (what kind of requirements, experience) to get a job here?! Thank you in advance.

For those in the field, how is the job market for Web Developers? How has the recession affected the industry, and how will outsourcing affect the future? I've been self-educating on .Net (C# + VB) via video tutorials and I think it's something I can be great at. It's definitely something I'm interested in. I'd like to get into the field but I'm deeply worried about the stability of IT jobs.

I am fluent in C# and VB/VB.NET and can probably write any application for windows to accomplish a certain task. I'm getting the hint that this means nothing though, and the languages I know are more like "fake" programming. Am I basically right in assuming this knowledge is useless, insofar as I will get laughed at if I apply for jobs in the hardware industry (device drivers, firmware), academia (mathematical applications) or game industries (3d graphics, A.I.)?

I've always wondered what computer programmers do. Is it a boring job? I heard they can work around their own schedules because they work from home.

I currently have no experience with coding, and am looking to learn it. I currently am hoping to either learn javascript, and/or C#. I am wondering if there are any languages I should learn before learning these, or which one I should learn first. I am looking to learn it mainly for game coding, and the current engine I am using accepts javascript C# or boo, but I have heard boo is not very good. Thank you.

I have a BS in Computer Science and Engineering ('98) and have worked as Software Test Engineer (hated that), Programmer, Database Developer. Right now I'm a Developer working for a small consulting firm barely making 42k. I've done VB, some Oracle, some SQL Server and lots of MS Access. In my current job I'm stuck working with Access a lot. I'm in a small town so there's not much available here, but are there areas in the US where I could find a decent job easier? I'm finding that I'm falling behind really fast as this position is not keeping me engaged in the latest technology. I have done a little VB.Net here, but they're not offering any training and I'm tired of trying to figure everything out on my own.
